I am trying to get a few coins from each major country involved in WW II. I would like to get some coins that were directly impacted by the war. (metal change, composition change, etc.). I already have some American coins. I am mainly looking for coins (and maybe some notes) from the following countries...

Nazi Germany
England
France
Italy
Japan
Russia

Can anyone give a few tips on what coins to get? I am going to stick to a low budget for this.

--spare 35% War Nickels

Belgium:

Nazi Coins:

I already have all the U.S. coins I think I will use. Does anyone know how expensive common Nazi coins are?

You might add Australia to your list:
60 air raids in northern Australia;
submarine raid in Sydney Harbour;
30,000 Australian war dead;
hundreds of thousands of Americans passed through here, and many died in our skies and on our seas;
Pres OBAMA recently visited a memorial to USS Peary, sunk, in action, in Darwin.

I suggest you look at Australian silver coins of WW2 -
some have mint marks "S" or "D", - minted at San Francisco or Denver.

China would be considered a major participant of WWII although I'm not sure about their coinage during that period. There are some interesting Canadian Nickels that would fit your description nicely (1942-1945).

Nazi coins aren't too expensive. I found some in a junk bin for about 50 cents a piece. I got two. I recently bought a 5 RM coin (1934) for melt value which was a great deal. I haven't gotten it in the mail but I'm happy to receive.

Why stick only to those countries? If you going for low budget coins you can find plenty in junk/bargain boxes. You might not have the good luck to find coins with swastika in a junk box like 'duncanbishop24' did because some dealers do sort them out - oddly seems to be quite a demand for nazi memorabilia in the Anglo-Saxon world, but you should still get some quite cheaply.

Amongst the interesting coins of the era are the Faroe Islands coins which only came into being because the islands were occupied by the British while the rest of Denmark was occupied by the Germans.

There were a good number of zinc coins made in some of the occupied countries during that time. It might be interesting to put together a set of those. I have a few and they are interesting coins even though they are not the nicest looking.

I asked before I looked through the junk bin before I searched. He said he thought he dumped a bit in. They were small zinc coins. Nothing special or good condition but still great as a first.

I know it was briefly mentioned but Canadian victory nickles have a morse code message along the rim that says "we win when we work willingly" ..

There is also a lot of great history in most of the gold sovereigns from most of the nations that were involved as well...

I think the OP has a great idea for a theme album. It sounds like fun. The Canadian Victory nickels sound like a must have.

I bought a roll of 35% silver US War Nickels at spot this week to add to my stack. (If it wasn't at spot then it sure as heck is now!) I've never and don't intend to ever sell any coins, but I'll be happy to share if any CCF member contributing to this topic just wants a specimen of this WWII type.

France is good. Lots of types that were only produced during the war years and not expensive.

As for banknotes some occupied countries had notes either overstamped or specifically produced by the occupying German authorities.

And, I forgot, Japanese Occupation notes. Notes for Dollars, Pesos and Rupees for use in the occupied coutries in South-East Asia. Again not expensive.

thai-vic post reminds me of this 1944 Philipine coin recently mentioned. It would fit well into this category.

I am putting together almost same-thing with all countries I have gotten several hundred coins in two 3 inch binders so far

i put allied coins on one page and on next the axis

most coins I got in junk bins although nazi silver coins can run high

also common mint marks are cheap but some of the rarer ones can get very steep
