I have only two Morgan dollars. I just never have seen the appeal of them.

All that balled up greasy, dirty looking hair. Maybe I would be more interested if Mrs. Morgan washed her hair, or perhaps if she had a neck.

I remember first hearing about "Morgan" dollars, and wondering to myself "who's Morgan?"

Peace dollars are bold, bleak, they have a simple message:"Peace", Ms. Liberty looks dignified and strong - like she's thinking "aahh I could turn and destroy you with my spiky tiara thing". She reminds me of the mythological Poseidon.

I guess I judge coins more by their caricature than by their shininess.

Things just make more sense that way.

scottk,
I also have never been attracted to them!
Back in the day an uncle would give my sister and me a silver dollar each and when we got home dad traded them
for a good ol' paper dollar! Then off to the store for a toy.
Today I still do not care much for them. I have a little over two rolls. A few nicer Morgans and Peace are set aside
as types. The rest are just junk silver to me.

I'd trade both extra rolls for a nice XF 1901-S dime.
(sigh)

Hmmm! I don't collect either option (I have one Morgan and no Peace dollars), but if I had to pick one it would be the Peace dollar.

Reason 1) I also think it just looks better and gives a 'bang' to me when looked at. It looks like they used an old, over-weighted barmaid for the face on the Morgan. The Peace dollar shows a younger, more vibrant model from the artist.

Reason 2) The Peace dollar is much easier to collect than the Morgan dollar. One only has to buy 26 coins to complete a Peace dollar collection, while 115 (I think) exist to fill a Morgan collection. Also, most of the coins (all but two)for the later set are quite reasonable, while the earlier Morgans are full of expensive types.

If I did ever want to start a new collection, Peace dollars and/or Franklin halves would probably be my choice.

Well, at least let's get our facts straight. "Mrs. Morgan" she was not - her name was Anna Williams, and she was a schoolteacher.

On the other hand, the model for Liberty on the Peace dollar was the designer's wife.

I'll take an MS66/67 Peace dollar over a Morgan any day. The luster on a Peace dollar is hard to beat. Coming in a close second would be an MS66 Full Head Standing Liberty type 1.

LOL...I'll take a Morgan over a weakly struck, low relief Peace any day of the week.

Let's see:

PL & DMPL Morgans vs. Oh yeah Peace dollars don't have that.
As a variety enthusiast Morgan's win hands down.

For full disclosure I collect both Peace & Morgans and love both.
Teresa Cafarelli de Francisci is much better looking than Anna. The Peace eagle kinda has an Art Deco thing to it.
They both have their positive attributes and I will continue to collect both.

Preach it, Double Eagle!

I prefer Morgans in both circulated and uncirculated grades, but I will only touch a Peace that is circulated. I cannot stand uncirculated Peace dollars.

I think we've done this before.

Please show us pictures to make your case.

Here's why the Peace dollar is better

I don't think strike strength really matters when you're striking the likeness of a human/bulldog hybrid.

Isn't that the reason why there are so many BU Morgan dollars? I don't think anybody liked them when they were current, either. They ended up with stacks in vaults unused.

Personally, I think the stunning eagle on the reverse and the fantastic silver strike quality of that coin series makes up for any complaints you may have of the liberty portrait.

I think that the Peace dollar is certainly more beautiful, but it offers the collector nowhere near what the Morgan dollar series offers, varieties (VAMs), lots of dates and mintmarks, certain rarities (1889-CC, 1893-S, 1895 Proof only) etc. Hoards were found leaving millions of them available to collectors, ie; Carson City collectors (GSA), Chicago Continental Bank, LaVere Refield hoard, etc.
There is just more interest because there are more of them, I think.

Peace is much cuter. I have a 1964 Carr Peace dollar and it is gorgeous - no strike issues there!
