I know very little about Canadian coins but those look like inverted V's, but maybe that's how they were minted back then.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Inverted v are a possibility yet very slim cause I'd imagine it would be a known variety by now. I'm thinking its an over polished die or lots of die ware or both.
Feel free to call me Will.

Please post larger sharp pics of both sides and we will look for other "markers".. Notice how the I is also incomplete... ...let's see all of the both side legends..
Could be a filled die..ie:..grease in the die..but I'm no expert in these matters...

I'm thinking its the result of a plugged die. Grease for instance.

Probably Grease Filled Dies. Many other letters are missing serifs ..etc..(example..the "A" in CANADA)

If it were an overpolished die, grease filled or a similar event, would there still not be slight markers of any kind where the cross bar attaches the sides. I don't see any evidence of that at all in both "A's" or call it inverted "V's", IMO.

The "A" in "CANADA" caught my attention right off. Interesting find!

The 1870 10 cent coin charlton # 18 has an exact variety as your coin---- It is called " Die Deterioration , IA of GRATIA ". Yours is surely a variety in Rob Turners book.

I see doubling in T and possibly all of CENT, and 5 and possibly all of 1858.

Yes Rob Turner identified this die pair several years back. It is an RA1/OE1. His notes on the obverse include missing or filled serifs. They are definitely A's not V's. See page 200 of his 1858 Cents of Provincial Canada book.
