Washington University in St. Louis and the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society (EPNNES) have announced plans to create the Newman Numismatic Portal, an online research tool that will become the ultimate go-to resource for the study of coins and currency. A commitment of $2 million from EPNNES will support the project.

This seems to be a common occurrence, selling off part of a collection to fund an online library/resource. It's a great idea but I hope they are getting what they're paying for, as web development is not immune to artificially escalated prices.
Well Eric is 105 this year, so probably time to sell off his collection anyways. Here is a photo of my friend Mark Borckardt, of Heritage Auctions with Eric in St. Louis, MO taken on 12/15/2014, Eric is looking pretty good for almost 105 years old!
Quote: From what I understand they will also be digitizing his library as well, and that is one heck of a library.
EXACTLY!

Incredible, a living legend, think of the coins he probably saw when they were just released. I can imagine what it would be like to live when some of the most beautiful US coinage was in circulation. Here's hoping he lives alot longer. It would be interesting to hear his opinions on the current coins being minted. The guy looks to still be pretty spry!
Maybe a good thing and maybe just one more source for coin information. At coin shows lately I've seen tables full of books on coins. Many, many web sites on coins too. Lots of coin forums on the internet. Just not sure about one more place for information.

So just_carl, it sounds like, from watching the clip, that the site wouldn't actually provide the detail/information (in order to protect the interests of the publisher), but rather where to find it. They say it's the Google of Numismatics, so possibly somewhat of numismatic one-stop-shop.
There is a need for an organization to step up and create an authoritative, independent, and comprehensive online resource for numismatics. I had always thought the ANA would have succeeded at this by now, but they haven't. I'm hoping this progresses at Washington University past documenting Newman's collection.
