Looks like someone moved the star on my 81S Morgan. Some of the letters have the same mark. What causes it?  |

I believe that is something that happens when a coin tones, I am not sure how to explain it though. I'm assuming you r coin is toned?

I have a blast white Morgan dollar with the same exact thing on the stars and lettering. I've always wondered what it was too...  |

It has some toning. This picture is darker than the coin really is. I'm still working on picture taking. The star pic above is from the right of 81.  |

It's described as an artifact of the strike, with metal flow not under consistent pressure nearer the devices. The metal in that area has been forced into a different crystalline structure less susceptible to toning.

SsuperDdave nailed it. Take a lump of playdough and put a thin coating of another color on top. Then squish it with your finger and you'll see the same sort of patterns emerge.
Depending on how well alloyed and finished the planchet was, it will change the surface properties of the smushed metal along the flow lines.

It provides a somewhat-reliable standard for evaluating toning, also. The circumstances of artificial toning usually defeat that shadow, so it tends to confirm natural toning.
