old gold I'm going to say XF45 maybe AU50. These are an area that I don't have a lot of knowledge about so I might be overlooking something. -MV

I'm at AU53 but gold is not my strong point. The only thing I can think of that would pull a details grade would be that the surfaces have a large amount of hairlines but the coin is over 200yrs old...geez. I like it. Nice example of an early gold piece

I'm thinking AU-50. Large, early, gold and in excellent condition. What could be better?

The obverse fields do appear to be cleaned and certainly it could have been dipped in the past. That said, neither issue appears severe in light of the issue. Draped Bust Gold usually grades problem-free absent obvious/serious problems. Your coin may have net graded a few points though and my guess would be AU50 on the holder. The piece looks AU+ to me.

My first thought was AU55 with a slight possibility of details for an old cleaning. Might just be my eyes, but I think I "might be seeing something" around the obverse around 9:00-10:00 maybe some sort of a repair job? Hope not, never less it's a real beautiful coin for such an old gal.
This one is the small stars reverse I think (I'm sure no expert in early gold). The few that I have seen in low end MS aren't as nice looking generally as yours is Jaobler, they are usually full of hairlines, this one looks pretty clean in the fields when compared to most of them out there. If this one got the details, and it wasn't for the spot I think I see (repair) or an old cleaning, then possibly due to a coin doctor smoothing out the fields? I sure hope not, but these are the types of coins the coin doctors look out for.

This coin was a crack-out from an NGC "AU Details Improperly Cleaned" slab. The cleaning showed to me as just a reduction in luster on the obverse, very subtle. I saw no hairlines, tooling, or other problems and thought it was worth a resubmission to PCGS. Result to follow....

I love gold, but (other than 1 case) I tend to stay away from yellow gold. Yellow means it has been cleaned/dipped. In the case of a details coin, if the luster is impaired at all, it's likely that it was overdipped.

Westcoin, you are correct about the Small Stars variety. Likely subjected to a gentle cleaning at some point, it was nevertheless judged market-acceptable by PCGS. The assigned AU-53 grade may represent a net-grade adjustment since overall detail looks more 55 than 53. As an official problem-free coin it is the best single piece in my collection.

This is exactly why grading is subjective. This coin is nice and its very expensive and high end and I dont have anything against OP but honestly NGC had this one correct. Ive heard in the past TPG services are more lenient with older gold coins. So we come to the conclusion of buy the coin not the holder. I wouldnt buy this one. This coin was for sure overdipped/cleaned.
