I first saw this coin at the 2008 RCNA convention and was blown away by it. It was not for sale then. I kept track of the coin and periodically expressed my interest to the owner. We finally did a deal at the recent Landon auction.

The picture below is my first quick and dirty effort at imaging this coin. It really does not do it full justice, in either luster or detail. Any, and I mean any, marks are on the PCGS holder, not the coin. This is the best Newfoundland cent I have ever seen, bar none. IMO it is better than the Belzberg 1909 cent. Both are in PCGS 66 Red holders.

This coin almost certainly came from the Baldwin basement cache. Baldwins had quite a few high grade 1909 cents stored for decades and slowly sold them to a few dealers in the 1970's. This one will not be for sale again for a long time.

You were blushing with pride when you told me about the 1909 at the Landon auction pub. It's good to see a shot of it. Congrats.

Jimmy - I think there is a good possibility this coin has never been in Newfoundland unless a previous collector/owner lived there. I think Baldwins somehow got these straight from The Royal Mint and held them until the 1970's. The dealers bought them and then dispersed them to collectors.

Would have loved to have had a dealer come to me in the 70's with one of those 1909's.. Great work Rob..!!

Almost looks like a specimen strike Rob... I had noticed that your set had been upgraded.

Certainly a lightly used die when it struck this coin, but the rims are not square enough to make me think specimen.

Tremendous coin ... congratulations on the purchase.

I claim zero expertise in this series ... but value and appreciate the patience it takes to wait all those years to acquire a treasured example.

Congratulations.
