Hi everybody. I was just wondering how many people collect centenary of federation coins (20 and 50c). Obviously I do. If you do collect them what size is your collection. I'd particularly be interested if you find more of a certain state in your area than others.

Thanks, Ben

I found them a nightmare to look for an example each. The only spares I got hold of is the NSW 50 cents and the Tasmanian 20 cents. I have listed what I got in a page. (I should add that UN 20 cents that I got from nancyc up soon)

I remember getting the QLD 20 cents in Canberra and the ACT 50 cents from a coin dealer (no I didn't buy it off him but got it as a change). Got the rest in NSW under mad patience although 6 more holes can be quite a pain to wait for. I'm curious though, were these coins only distributed with respective to the state it was designated for? If that's the case, it can be quite interesting.

Hi Ben, I have quite a large number of most of the CoF coins. I'll have to check which I have most of, I know Qld 20¢ are pretty prolific, not 100 sure about the others. When I get a chance, I'll do a quick count.

In my area (south-eastern Victoria) I have managed to find a large number of Victoria and Norfolk Island 20c coins. Of the 50c coins it's Victoria and Western Australia.

The coins I struggle to find are (in order);

20c - Northern Territory (twice as hard to find), ACT and Queensland
50c - South Australia and ACT

I have a complete set of both 20c and 50c. I had three sets, but traded the other two.

On my desk in front of me now, I have a ACT 20c and a NSW 50c.

I have all of the 50cent federation coins but all are in BU condition
I have managed to obtain some circulated but the majority of those were the ACT and the interesting part of that was I picked them up in my pocket change while in Canberra -

Maybe they walked out of Yass's collection?

Richard,
With regard to those that 'walked', please 'ship' them back. We don't want to wear them out do we?

So does anybody have a large number of NT and ACT 20c pieces? I'd be happy to trade some Vic and NI 20c pieces for some (Nancy I'd be happy to trade for some Queensland coins as well if you like).

It would be interesting to see if the 'local' coins are most common for your area. That is, I live in Victoria and they are the most common federation coin in my area. I am wondering if it's the same for all states. Maybe I need to find a person who lives in the Northern Territory and ACT! Yass do you come across many ACT federation coins? I'd ask everyone but I'm not sure where you all live.

Hi Ben, I haven't had a chance to check out my CoF coins yet, had to go up north for a few days, just got back. When I get caught up on things at home, I'll get into some numbers.

bjw I'm from the ACT but I had to buy my 20c ACT federation - I had never seen it before. I get the vic & tas ones fairly often, and occasionally the NSW, SA & WA.

I'm in Brisbane, and I managed to find all the CoF coins in circulation back in 2001, with the sole exception of the NT 50¢. I still haven't seen one of those - it's the only circulating commemorative I've never seen in change. And I've only ever found one highly chlorinated NSW 20¢, and that was from down in Sydney.

As for geographic releases, no, the coins weren't shipped to the respective states for release and circulation there. They were made at various times throughout the year, and shipped where and when coinage was needed, with no attention paid to the design. It's probably just as well they didn't do that, or Norfolk Island might have sunk under the weight of all those coins!

Unfortunately, I don't particularly collect 20 cent pieces. I did buy a couple of federation rolls, but for the life of me, I can't remember if they were 20s or 50s. I think they were 20s. I'll check my database when I get home. I know I have about 4 states.

I stopped buying the rolls because the price for them went through the roof. I would suggest that someone buy a roll, open it and sell the coins individually to other members to recoup the cost. They'd be reasonably cheap that way.

Hey Sap, If you PM me your address, I'll send you a NT 50¢ & a NSW 20¢. I've got spares of all 18 of these coins. No trade necessary, just helping you fill a couple spaces.

Thanks, nancyc, but I should have been more specific: in one sense, I already have these coins. Back in 2002 when it looked like they'd dried up from circulation, I went and bought a full set of Unc CoF state coins from a local dealer. I was just talking about genuinely "found in circulation" examples. For this exercise, swaps and gifts don't count; that would be cheating.
