to CCF! There are many ways to catalog your collection. The topic comes up here somewhat frequently, so I suggest you use the Search tool (4th from the right in the toolbar above) and do a search on the subject. Lots of folks using Excel and others are using dedicated software.

And you can always put questions to the group posting in those various threads you uncover. Good luck!

to the Community!

Spreadsheets are simple, effective, and cheap (even free if you use one of the free alternatives to Excel).

I have used a spreadsheet for nearly thirty years, dating back to my Commodore 64.

I have started with an excel file...

Pick one coin up.. data entry... put that one aside and go on to the next... it's a long and tedious process but keeps me away from the auction sites...

My next goal is proving links on the excel file to an internal web file that will have pictures of each coin.

I use an Excel spreadsheet and it has worked out well for me. I also write the date when I cataloged the coin on the back of the 2X2.

If you don't want to buy Microsoft Office, Google has a free spreadsheet program on Google Drive.

And, don't forget those using a database program. I use MS Access and it works fine for me.

I also use an Excel spreadsheet. Google Sheets is the free Google equivalent as others have mentioned. Depending on how extensive your collection is, a spreadsheet is a good place to start. Originally I started with one sheet in my workbook and used it to track U.S. Mint purchases/products. In the past 15+ years it has grown to over 20 sheets for tracking inventory in individual albums, bullion, wish lists, etc. The advantage to a spreadsheet is that it is highly customizable.

I use Excel too. I have used MS Access for other collections, and it's great, but there's a steeper learning curve in addition to having to actually have the program.

If you can use Excel, do so. Very universal and you can easily find out how to use it almost anywhere. If wanting to know something, you can ask here or almost anyone, anywhere.
Now here is a bit of warning. Way back when I first thought of doing what your planning on doing, I made columns in Excel for Dates, Mint, Grade, Cost, Date purchased, where purchased, present value and lots of other things. Eventually I realized I really don't need lots of those and started deleting one after another. Eventually I now have date, mint, Grade and estimated value. Really don't need more than that if it's just a hobby.

I'm in the minority. I use an app. called us coin collector. Link it to Dropbox and you can access it from you phone, ipad etc. Easy to use, works well. Always safe on the cloud when you perform a back up after you add a coin. It takes a while to add a large collection, but is very satisfying when you get them entered. I have pics of every coin with me all the time.

@ jpbone

That sounds like an interesting program. I too use Dropbox for lots of things that I want to have access to at different locations. I'm having trouble finding the app you're talking about though. Do you know who the makes it by any chance?

Thanks

*edit. I found it. Looks like an Apple iTunes only app. bummer.

I use excel, it allows for multiple sheets which is a must for me. When I first started, everything was all on the same sheet and got quite "muddled up" so to speak I have since created separate sheets for bullion, Canadian, American, etc so it is easy to find what I am looking for. Only drawback is I still have not found a way to embed an image of the coins into the excel spreadsheet, can only create a link to a location on the Internet..if there's a way to insert an image someone please enlighten me!

@ Fireman638. There's a couple of ways to embed images into Excel, however the better way is fairly cumbersome. And unfortunately it makes the file much larger than a normal excel file.

Here's a link to the easy way which fills up your spreadsheet with the images rather quickly

http://www.solveyourtech.com/insert...-excel-2010/

Here's another way to do it. It's a little more time consuming but instead of filling up your spreadsheet with the images you'll only see them as you hover over the cell that you assign it to. It's done using the comment option.

It's the first answer in this link

https://answers.yahoo.com/question/...81425AAVNS5F

Quote:
- go to Insert menu | Comment
- right click on cell F3 > Edit Comment
- then move your mouse, 'till it show like plus arrow sign >
right click the mouse to open Format Comment...
- choose Colors and Lines tab | Fill > Color > Fill Effects...
- choose Picture tab > then Select Picture.. Click ok.

Congratulations! Now, you have an embed picture in excel that's display/show only if you hover over it.
Good luck

Here's an example of how it might look on your screen doing it this way. I used one of your ebay auctions for the image. This image only pops up when you hover over the cell (in this case cell A2). Like I said though adding pictures makes the size of your excel file balloon in size pretty quickly.
