So I'm starting out on my golden dollar collection. I'm planning on getting all of them including the various varieties. I went to a small show today and found a dealer who had a binder of them in 2x2's. So I figure sweet, I'll sit down and knock a bunch out. They were in order by year. I started at the front of the binder and soon figured out that I was going to be hard pressed to find one that met the standards that I was looking for. I don't want perfection, but I thought that MS66 to MS67 would be achievable. The coins I was looking at were uncirculated, but most looked dinged and rubbed all over. Some had spots and luster missing from being touched. Worse part about it, the dealer was just sitting right there hovering over my every move. I gave up and excused myself. I'm wondering if the good ones had already been picked over and he was just trying to sell the low grade pieces? Or, is this pretty much what I can expect? I don't mind paying more for MS66 to MS67 quality, but don't want to spend money on slabs which cost more than the coins are even worth. I'd appreciate advice on the subject. Also, assuming that I can find them in MS66 to MS67 condition, what is a typical dealer price for the dollars assuming they're a common date/variety/mint?

Presidential dollars? I get decent ones that would prob qualify for ms-63-65 for like a $1.75 at one of my lcs. They just have slight contact marks. Now the other shops that are usually cheaper charge more for them.

I feel the best way to get better grade small dollars
would be to look at mint sets. Most of the 2005 through
2010 will have better grade coins .. but they have
satin coins. I like satin coins .. but some choose
to find business strike coins .. but it will be
harder to find better grade coins.

The 2000 through 2004 mint sets will have business strike
coins .. if you can look through enough of them you
should be able to find good coins.

Of course the 2000 through 2006 mint sets will only have the
Sac small dollars. 2007 and up will have both Sac, native
American and Presidential dollars.

If you find a coin shop that bought mint wrapped rolls,
there may be some of better quality.

Some years the mint sold sets that just had "P and D"
president dollars. With luck you may find some of those.

Once you get enough time and post, here on CCF, you can
post a want list, and may be able to get some from other
members.

Although the Presidential series is no longer minted for circulation, only for collectors, it's not as though the mint is TREATING the coins like collectables. They are minted in the millions (approx. 8m each).

So they run through the high speed minting machines, into the Ballistic Bags, get moved around by forklift and then are run through high speed counting and wrapping machines. So it's really no surprise that they have bag marks.

I understand that these are going through the normal minting process, but the ones I saw looked at were very low grade uncirculated. Coins like the ones pictured above are what I'm looking for.

Bret

If you like the looks of the coins I posted, then you have to get
Satin coins, that came in the mint sets 2007 - 2010.

But then you wil have to go to business strike coins 2011
to date. That is what I have done. From 2011 I still get
my modern coins from mint Sets, I think they are of
better quality/grades.

I'm actually wanting to get both the satin and business strike versions for the dates that have both. I looked at some of my recent mint sets. The coins do appear better over the years. Given that we're paying multiple times face for them, the least they could do is handle them so that they don't get contact marks or spots.

Someone posted ...in the recent past.

That the mint does have a better process for minting the coin
they issue in the mint sets.

I understand. But given the premium that we pay for what are basically business strikes, they should make the post strike effort to prevent them from contacting each other.

Just for fun, I am going to buy some rolled golden dollars directly from the mint to see how they compare to what I see at the shows.

I found sealed 2009-D roll of Tyler Presidential dollars on ebay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sealed-Roll...:RTQ:US:1123
But, something didn't seam right. First, what is the World Reserve Monetary Exchange? That seal sure looks fancy though. The bigger red flag is that they're selling the "roll" for $20. All of the small dollar rolls that I've seen have 25 coins. If I can buy them for $20 I'll play this game all day long. However, being somewhat smart, I decided to ask the seller how many coins are in the roll. Answer: 12.

This roll is not a mint issued item. It is something they put together.
