Halfway through 1982, the mint switched from the copper composition used since 1909 to a zinc with copper plating composition. The reason for this was because the cost of producing the copper cents was exceeding one cent. Because the switch was made mid-year, some weigh 3.1g (copper) and some weigh 2.5g (zinc aka Zincolns).
He would probably enjoy my youtube videos in my signature line under this message. It is in 5 segments and about 2.5 hours long on coin collecting. What to save, what is out there and what to throw back.
Something else for chewy to put on his radar would be the 1983 copper cent (3.11g) as copper planchets were not intended to be struck after 1982, but yet some did.
Pending his future preferences, it may pay for one or two years of college books or a whole bunch of itunes? Thanks, Doug.
