Some people argue that since they never really got out into circulation, that makes them NIFC. But since NIFC means "Not Intended for Circulation", 2001 does not fall into this category (as mintage figures show that they were indeed intended for circulation). Report this Post to the Staff

No big deal- I'll just place it back in circulation, but would like to know if the 2008 Red Book listing is wrong on this coin by stating the 2001P was "not issued for circulation"(Pg 204) when it really was placed in circulation. It was intended to circulate, but it was not issued. So, it depends on what you think the 'I' in NIFC stands for! Semantics. Therefore they simply sat in the mint and were sold by the bag on the mint website until as recently as last year if I remember correctly. There are over 20,000,000 2001 p's but all the nifc issues afterwords were less than 10,000,000 minted. -XoG Report this Post to the Staff

IMHO both P & D were minted with intent to circulate ( not that they really circulate), even if they are just sitting in a vault somewhere. Whether intended for circulation or not, quite a few have found their way into the general JFK half population. All dates 2002 and newer are an order of magnitude less common than the 2001, in my experience. Report this Post to the Staff
