JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

Dumped off some halves and picked up a 1986 silver eagle for a dollar!!
Then I picked up a box of $500 and pulled a 2005d a 90% and 2 40%'s

Today, I had the day off, so I decided to go on a mini-road trip (actually, just to a neighboring town), but I did hit a dozen banks I virtually never visit.

Results:
$116 total halves searched
Just 2 silver halves found: (1) 1964, (1) 1967

Also - picked up 38 Ikes, including a BU 1973 clad and a 1973-S silver proof (at back-to-back banks!)

Two-dollar bills were a skunk (no Red Seals), although I did pick up a '28C and '28G $2 from a bank last week. The guy also had a $1, $5, and $10 Blue Seal, but wouldn't give them up (one of the bills had writing on it, and he must think only Blue Seals are worth saving, anyways. I asked him if he was sure he wanted to give them up...)

He said some kid comes in and deposits obsolete currency that some old man gives him. It made sense, since the bank had exactly $20 in non-FRNs. Poor old guy thinks the kid appreciates it.

One bank had literally thousands of dollars of halves in bags, just sitting out on a cart in plain view. The coin counting machine was being emptied, and the others were being shipped out. I asked a banker if I could buy the bags directly (knowing I probably could not.) He never answered that, but he asked if I was "one of those guys who looks for silver." I admitted I was (he seemed like a cool dude) and he told me that two other hunters dumped thousands of dollars in halves every week there.

Well, at least I found a dump bank the cool way (instead of finding rude tellers to punish, lol).

He didn't seem to mind at all that he had to deal with massive amounts of halves, which is a good sign for hunters in general (I've read several posts about customers being forced to close their accounts due to excessive half dumping.)

I stopped at a Wells Fargo and asked for halves. They only had a few loose ones but as I was talking with the teller I saw a gentleman go to another window to deposit a bunch of assorted coin rolls, including $70 in halves. His teller kindly sold those rolls back to me after his business was done. They contained two Franklins plus several silver-clads. You can't beat those customer-wrapped rolls!

I probably should have asked for the other rolls that the customer turned in. Perhaps there was something good there also....

I would also agree that there is a higher yield on the customer rolls, but as my recent streak attests to, I'm not having much luck and it is very time consuming to drive around to numerous banks and get no silver. It's not much effort to pick up and dump a $500 box. I went to a PNC yesterday and a Wachovia, both had no silver, but the PNC did say that the lead teller had a bunch of havles. She was at lunch of course and I couldn't get at them. I'm now 0/16 on walk-ins to banks.

Joe, she's got a crush on you, that's the only explanation, figure it out. I could pick anybody off the street who can add two and two together and tell them, "Here, this is silver, do you want it?," and they'd take it in a heartbeat! I'd watch out for this one, pal. She's probably got some silly notions...

The key's are patience, perseverance and luck on box searching!

Sooner or later a "MONSTER BOX" is going to surface! :)

I went through 2 boxes this week. The first one had a NIFC 2003 but no silver. The second box contained 3 40%.
I also went through 2 boxes of nickels at the same time. I've posted my nickel findings under the topic "The Goal, 25,000 nickels...".

I just acquired another box from a bank which I don't even have an account with (Harris Bank). I've gone through 7 rolls so far and have found 3 40% (two of them were on the end of rolls) I'll post an update when I finish the box.
