Spend them, don't return them! So many places I spend them, people who have never seen them exchange them out of the cash register. Stimulates others to collect and thereby removes them from circulation indefinitely! You can easily dump $20 at a gas station for gas.

having never seen a bank box or bank roll of half dollars' A couple of basic questions if anyone wants to help me out:
How much $ is a box of half dollars to buy at face? How many coins / $ in one roll of halfs?
Thanks

Usually $500 box, $20 per roll, 40 coins per roll, 25 rolls per box.

A box has 50 rolls of of $10.00. I have only once gotten a ccr that was a $20.00 roll. I thought that was kinda cool. I'll warn you that most boxes produce zero silver maybe 1 40%er. Remember the key is to always be nice to bank tellers! Even if they are giving you a hard time dumping them. We need to keep them happy so we all can enjoy our hobby of modern day treasure hunting.

I know others will disagree, but I would recommend trying to find loose halves or customer wrapped rolls (CWR) at banks. In my limited experience, you will average about one 40% piece per box and many boxes will have none. Yes, if you read all 287 pages of this thread, you will see a few "epic" boxes. But your changes of experiencing anything like searching boxes are very, very small. I find that the odds are much greater with teller trays and CWR, plus it's more of a treasure hunt. Of course, it takes more time, which may be at a premium. It also depends on what area of the country you live in and how much local competition you have.

Like mycrob said, I try and spend a few halves when I can. I have gotten quite a few strange and funny reactions in the process too! As for my finds, I have searched quite a bit during my busy summer. I was living abroad and am moving back to the USA now. I always make sure to search what I can, and usually do fairly well with halves. This year it's been a bit of a disappointment, but after going through a grand total of over $600 and finding just a few NIFC, I finally found 1 40% today. I think I will try and get some CWRs, but how do you get them? I suppose just ask and become friends with the tellers, right? Also, do most of you order rolls from a bank or do they usually have them? It seems like I am one of the few who doesn't have a big problem getting rolls of halves, but I haven't done large quantities like people many here.

bnacoin, I think persistance and patience is the key for boxes. Though I have pulled quite a few 40%s from cwrs the bulk of the stuff I've pulled overall has been from a handful of boxes. The other problem with cwrs is that they are infrequently found and the only way banks get them is through deposits, I always take them if there available but most of the time by me they arn't to be found so I mostly go through boxes because I can always order them.

Well I have officially been roll hunting for just about a year now. Did 1 box a week for about 8 months and doing 4 boxes for about 4 months now. Cashed in once in December for 394 dollars and will be cashing in tomorrow for ~930 dollars. Has been a fun ride. Transferring to a different college though and wont be able to keep up the sorting! Now comes the wait for winter break!

Went through 2 boxes today and found only NIFC's. Whats interesting though is 99% of them came out of the same box, and 15 of them were AU/BU 2010's. Kinda neat since I hadn't found one out of like 50 + boxes

1 box today and guess what... NOTHING! I got another box at the bank just waiting for me. I'm going to bet that it's also clean of any silver! At least the wife will be happy that I'm at home searching a box rather than golfing with the boys. I'm starting to think golfing might be use of my time. Haha.
