I just bought 350 in halves from the bank. This was my first big buy/hunt. Nothing really good, but I got some bicentennials that seem uncirculated. It seems like these rolls were searched already though, some were even marked.

Hey. I have a question. When you go to these banks in the area. I as a newbie assume you all have an account at these banks? Have you ever went into a bank lets say "Bank of America, or Well's Fargo" and with 200 bucks in your wallet, go up to a cashier and ask for 200.00 in half dollars, dimes, nickels, or quarters?

I am in the Army, and my local bank is in another state. So I for the longest time have not done any roll hunting? Can anyone elaborate on this for me, or know if it works. I guess I could call the banks myself. But I put this question out there if anyone else has the same question or idea. Thanks

To jm20thengr: I deal w/ 2 banks where I have accts and the staff know me personally. I call up (or visit) the Supervising Teller (who does the weekly coin ordering) on a weekly basis and tell her what I want. She includes it in her weekly order and the boxes I want get there on the designated deliver day every week. If you just want to grab whatever loose rolls they have on hand that should work, too - but you'll be limited by what's there and be running the risk of rehunting the same rolls. I'd guess if you're going to be a regular at whatever bank(s) you use, you'll probably need to open up an account so you'll have the rights that go along w/ being a customer/account-holder. Good luck.

To mtldealer: Your pickup picture from yesterday is (at least to me) an eye-popper! If I'm not mistaken, that looked like $8K in halves. Do you do a pile that size every day, week, month or what? I've just escalated up to the level of grabbing 3 or 4 boxes at a time, but your pile of 16 boxes makes me realize I'm not even up to HO-gauge level yet! What do you do to hopefully ensure that you don't end up rehunting the same coins? Do you do your dumping a couple towns down the road at a different bank than where you get your boxes?

Yup! That is exactly what you do.

If they ask if you have an account, be honest. I say "No I do not" and pause. They will either say you need an account - like the local federal credit union did - ..and I opened an account with $5. -OR- They'll say "Well... I'll do it just this once." ... Although I'd estimate that 9 out of 10 won't ask and are eager to get rid of any halves that are laying around - Don't forget to ask for any "Large Dollars" too. I never want to say "Ike's" in hopes that their will be a couple Morgans or Peace dollars too!

and good luck!

Hey thanks alot for the response. I thought thats what I would have to do. Looks like I'm about to become a bank member some where's else. Anyone got any good ideas for a future back who's sole purpose would be just to get coins from. Not looking to open CD's, and Saving's bonds. Just keep $5.00 in an account and order rolls from, with hopefully no yearly fees.

@jm20thengr I agree with Lonz, 90% of the time, they don't care if you have an account to BUY coins.... sometimes they will want you to have one to sell them back though. I only have one account for dumping and I buy from all the banks that I don't have accts with. The difference is, you would have to have an acct there for them to ORDER coin boxes for you, I imagine, or at least that's the way it is at my banks...

Last night's sort... I refused to stop till I got another silver.
Box #1 - 1964 x 1, 1965 x 1, 1966 x 1, 1967 x 3, 1968 x 3, 1969 x 1
Box #2 - Skunk
Box #3 - Skunk
Box #4 - Skunk
Box #5 - Skunk
Box #6 - Skunk
Box #7 - Skunk
Box #8 - Skunk
Box #9 - 1965 x 1

I keep hunting because I know that even when I get other peoples dumps... I've found silver mixed again. I wonder if Garda does this to keep the banks buying boxes.

Great job Broseph!

Anyway, are there any clad halves I should be watching for?
I'm just wondering cause halves are really hard to come across where I live and I don't want to let them go but at the same time I don't want to hoard a bunch of common coins that are worth $0.50 at most.

My GF just came back from dumping a box of halves for me! At this point, the story goes from halves to large dollars!

At her bank, they know her face and always hand her a handful of halves and large dollars (I would have said Ikes, until today). She handed me an envelope with my dump money and a handful of halves and Ikes and ONE 1925 Peace dollar! I've only ever found one literally jammed in a coin counter intake. I cannot believe that in 2012 a bank teller would have HANDED that out to a customer. Amazing.
