FTB - I'd like to see your "Kindly" "Gentle Prodding" in action. If threats of escalation to corporate are kindly and gentle, I'd hate to see rude and rough.
Regardless whether a person agrees with the tactics, I think this is a good example of why you are able to have such an efficient system doing a relatively large amount of coin. You don't sound like the kind of guy that takes no for an answer.

I know most of the tellers at my local bank so if I see silver in one of their trays of course I ask to buy it if they are not saving it for themselves, most of the time they do not care about it. I do not need to tick off the tellers over a coin. Some of the managers on the other hand!

I see a lot of bicentennial Kennedy's when looking through boxes. Basically, I just pass them by. Is there anything I should be looking for on the bicentennials or are they usually just a regular half dollar?

Kurrykid, You'll find the occasional clad proof. Just look for the obvious mirror flat, frosted raise, along with an S mint. I've also found 2 silver bicent proofs over the past couple years.

What a crappy end to my biggest crhing week of the year. Out of 5 boxes, 112.50 lose, and $80 BWR, only one box produced. I just picked up a bag of 2000 halves. Got to the car before I noticed a taped up hole just large enough to remove coins. I opened the bag and spent 15 minutes pushing through the coin and of course, not a single keeper found. So frustrating. Maybe I'll get lucky on one of my boxes of dimes.

Remember that bank I mentioned a few posts back that was right between my two good boxes of halves on Wednesday? Well, I picked up those six boxes, started peeking through the holes, and enders galore... spotted 7 in one box, 2 in another, 1 in 2 others... Ripped open the best one (and recorded it, I'll post it later) and counted 13, yeah, 13 enders. Pretty sure that will be my third dream box. I'm going to record myself opening the whole box and post it here for your enjoyment.  Hey OO, I've taken no for an answer before... of course that teller ended up getting fired, but that's their own fault for treating me, the customer, poorly, in a customer-service oriented business. It's not my intention to get people in trouble or fired, but I'm certainly not afraid to do so if they won't give me the service that I deserve as a customer. Edited by FadeToBlack

I've had something similar happen at a bank before. I had asked if they had any half dollars, and when the teller pulled some out, the manager nearby told her he was "saving" that one, and she offered me the remaining halves. I'm pretty sure it was silver, but what can I do? I'm just a kid. I can't wait until I can start buying them by the box.

My head teller's last day was today  She was REALLY nice and was the one who called me about finding silver and to come in and get it! She is also friends now on my wife and my Facebook! However... I took in my JFK album (with proof holes) to show her and the others so they could see what they had been helping me accumulate. They were amazed at it and wondered what the poofs were. So I explained. I also explained that since the proofs were found in circulation, they weren't worth anything but .50 each. Well, the new head teller came out (knew who I was!) and she liked them also. She introduced herself, gave me her card with her email so I can get hold of her anytime. I asked her about ordering Ikes and she said she knows she cannot, but will email me a link she has that she says will get them delivered to my doorstep! Anyway, the tellers told me they would be looking for customer wrapped rolls, specifically silver to help me fill in the silver slots in the album, and the new head teller's parting words to me were, if I can ever help you with anything - give me a call! It looks like I still am going to have easy going roll hunting ... and a new friend!  How much squash could a Sasquatch squash if a Sasquatch would squash squash? Yep I know what you're saying, until you can run some volume it's hard to expect to find some silver. I was in the bank and a kid came in and asked if they had any halves as I was picking up several boxes I had ordered.

@Half hunter, awesome comeback for the teller! My teller story is, I asked for halves from the teller, and had had success at this branch before with Bu rolls and silver. Some other older woman teller comes over, sticks her nose in, and picks through what the teller had, which was several silver. I was really mad. I should have spoken to the manager. To me, it's like ordering a good steak at a restaurant, and when the waiter brings it to the table, he decides he wants to eat it himself, right in front of me. It's rude and unprofessional. @FTB, I'd like to hear more about that corporate rule regarding silver to customers. @Earle, if you find out that "to your doorstep" Ike deal, would you please share it? I'd like to hunt some more Ikes, but don't want to wait for them to appear at branches. Boxes 168 & 169Lucille Ball covered coin 2 more stadium covers 1992 S Proof St. Michael the Archangel Medallion from TD coin machine On the back, we found it said "STER. THEDA". So we looked it up, and "STER" is sterling, which is, I think, 925 silver. Anyone ever seen before?    |

12 boxes today, 27 90% and 137 40%. See the thread I made if you want more info on why I had such an awesome day.
Weekly totals were 1 Walker, 17 bens, 26 '64's, and 173 40% out of 33 boxes.

I really try to get along with tellers as well. If I am at a bank, and I know they collect, I do not even ask. Yet, if I had another teller come over and do what she did I would have a manager there in a split second if I had an account with the bank.
I am of half a mind to go back to the bank I mentioned last week where I was blatantly lied to by a teller. The oldest teller said they she did not have halves and they only tended to get SBAs. I said thank you and as I was walking away a second teller said she had some. Before I could ask for them, the third teller said that that I did not have an account and that only someone with an account could have halves.
The deception had been clearly revealed and I was not a happy camper. All three tellers now had this look on their face. I started to walk away again, paused, and then said I guess I will just have to get an account. The starkness of my voice said more than the polite words and they absolutely knew it.
Instead of opening an account, and then dumping there, I may just go back and ask to meet with their manager. I will ask her if it is customary to be treated in such a manner and if this is how I should expect to be treated if I decided to open an account. This should be sufficient for what took place.

Ken, I would definitely make sure that gets nipped in the bud... Things like that are almost like a virus... one teller leaves, keeps the habit of hoarding the halves and hiding them from customers, passes it to other tellers, they leave, do the same thing elsewhere, you get the idea. I make sure every single teller that attempts something like that with me learns their lesson fast. Want to serve your own needs? Start your own business... as long as you're on the clock, the bank more than likely expects you to treat customers with utmost respect and be willing to do nearly anything within reason to satisfy them. Every time I've said something about this to corporate or a manager, they take it very seriously and I never have problems after that.
To date, I've had 4 tellers fired. None were fired without prior warnings and disciplinary action, from what I've been told by other employees. 3 of those tellers held silver out on me multiple times, the fourth did it to someone else, then me. One was paticularly egregious, he would take silver out of the reject slot of the coin machine while servicing it for customers and pocket it... literally stealing from them. I purposefully dumped 2 silver quarters and a silver dime into the machine once... he comes over to help me, pockets my silver quarters, I called him out on the spot, tell him to take his hands out of his pocket. He refuses, I make a scene, manager comes over, makes him empty his pockets, I get my coins back, and he is taken to the back. I went out to my car to search some halves, waited in the parking lot to see what happened... he was escorted out and I haven't seen him there since.
It's a dog eat dog world out there. I'm nice to my tellers that deserve it. To those that cross me or anger me, well... heck hath no fury like a silver obsessive man who smells blood in the water.
