Oh I also got a 2001 silver Eagle. It was jammed in the coin return machine and the teller got it out and gave it to me when I was dumping my coins. After looking at 4 boxes of halves just prior to this, I didn't recognize what it was at first. It looked like a giant fake walking liberty.

Bkcoin153, Some banks will gladly order coin for you...some not. I recently had an issue with my bank refusing to order halves for me after they had ordered me 1 box only. My account is closed now. I've had much better luck with customer wrapped rolls. I have ordered 8 boxes from my new bank and only 1 box had any silver. I have been hitting all the neighboring towns and have heard from some of the banks that they are no longer allowed to order half dollars for their customers. If you start ordering by the box, remember to "dump" them someplace else. The quickest way to get a bank to quit ordering halves for you is to return them to the same branch you bought them at. Also get in the habit of stopping in any bank you happen to be near and check and see if they have any halves. Once in awhile you'll hit a "mini-hoard" like the one you found. If you find a bank that has several hundred dollars worth at one time...it's probably somebody elses dump bank. (most banks have to ship halves back in bags of $1000.00) I ususally will buy 10 rolls in this case and run through them outside the bank (just in case). I've also noticed that banks with Coinstar never seem to have any half dollars because they encourage customers to use the machine.

Yeah, I figured I would keep going around to smaller banks. How common is it to find silver halves in tellers' change drawers rather than in rolls? Also it would be good to know if there anyone else in the Pittsburgh area so I know which areas to avoid.

I've gotten a couple of 40% from teller trays. I guess some tellers are totally clueless because somebody reported getting Walkers from a teller tray.

Had a good day hitting banks while on a road trip to Southern California. About $200 worth of halves yielded 31 of the 40% silvers and 29 of the 1964 90% silvers. When I slid out one roll into my hand I saw it was solid silver from the edges and those turned out to be all 1964 coins. Sure brought a smile to my face!

Got skunked in my last 2 boxes. I miss the days when I would average 2-3 silver.

You know, I think with the success of this thread, there are far more people searching halves for silver in the last year than in the past. Perhaps all this searching is starting to dry things up a little?

My bank called me today and left me a message that somebody cashed in some half dollars (rare because they have coinstar). I ran up and bought all $26.00 in her tray. There were only 2-40% but 14-2005D. Some of the 2005D were so nice, I first thought they were proofs.

Don,
Great haul!

With all the boxes you go through, are you retired? Also, do you check for errors?

Havn't been doing good with Lincoln's or Jefferson's lately , so I just ordered a box of halves from my local bank yesterday.

It will be in this Thursday, I'll post the results!
