About two weeks ago I won this auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1886-Proof-...p=true&rt=ncLooks like a decent coin, good price Two nights ago I was playing with my camera following directions on here and found a spot above the 8's. I then went back to the listing, nothing there. I pulled the image from ebay into paint and zoomed in. Notice there is no spot and the tops of the 8's are cut off. Photoshopped to remove the spot?! I think at a minimum I should return this, but what else? file a complaint? Can someone double check please.

Interesting edit in that image. Surprising of a merchant that has 100% positive feedback. I'd contact the merchant to discuss this matter. The image clearly appears to be photoshopped with the top of the 8's cut off. All coins that I buy on ebay I verify that the coin listed is exactly what I received. I ran into a problem once with a 1921-S Walker that a merchant had listed. The coin I received was G and the coin listed was VG. Also the VG coin in the picture had a rim ding at 2:00 and the coin I received was missing the ding in the rim. I contacted the merchant and they apologized and stated that they shipped me the wrong coin. Fortunately they still had the VG coin at their shop. They shipped out the VG coin and I received it in about 5 days. In the package was a bubble mailer pre-paid shipping to ship the G coin back to them at their expense. In the end I was happy.

Honestly, I can see the spot in the ebay seller's photo, although it is more pronounced in your photo. Not sure about the 8's - a sloppy photoshop if that's what was done, but I am not sure that it was. This is a certified coin after all, so spot or not, NGC felt it was a PR64 and a pedigree at that (Highland Collection). It seems nice to me, but if it is going to bug you, there's a 14 day return. I don't think it's an intentional scam - spots like that are very sensitive to different light conditions. Does it jump out at you in hand, or do you just notice it in your photo?

I don't know that the 8's were actually chopped off... I think it is lighting giving an optical illusion (that and likely changing the photo coloring)... Although the color could have been clearly edited to lighten/hide that spot.

I would probably just send it back. That spot's gonna bug you every time you look at it, regardless of what NGC or anyone else thinks.
I wouldn't accuse the seller of scamming - but just to say I am really sorry but there is a spot above the date that didn't really show in your pictures and I would like to return the item for a refund. If they balk, then I'd start worrying about a scam.

Cert in the ebay listing matches the coin in my hand: 3899679-024. Can't tell on Stack's website what the cert # is, but there can't be too many Highland collection 1886 3cn PF64 with that spot. (Their picture shows it well, my photographic skills need work).

They look chopped off to me. Yeah, just return it if not happy. Simple solution.
I just noticed on the photo of the whole slab in the listing the spot is visible along with the tops of the 8s.

Quote: I don't know that the 8's were actually chopped off... I think it is lighting giving an optical illusion I wouldn't know how to do something like that except as a deliberate effort in postprocessing, and I teach photography here. Let me see what stories that image has to tell in the Gimp.

Since you are posting this is the forums it appears to me you are not happy, so just return it and be done with it.

There is no doubt in my mind that image has been altered to lessen the effect of the spot (I can still see the spot) in postprocessing, and I would testify to that. The person doing it wasn't very good, and the alteration is obvious.
Download the image and blow it up to 400%. You'll see plainly what I just saw.
Inform that seller, and link him to this thread. I'd like to speak to the guy here in public.

I see the spot in the ebay. It is the same coin for sure. I play around with photo editing once in a while (my wife has a degree in photo editing)and it has not been edited. If it was edited, he would have removed it all together. He could be a master editor and simply added some transparency to that area, But, for the price the coin realized, I don't think he would have wasted his time. More than likely the compression rate that the ebay photo is set too, simple covered it a little. It is a nice looking coin by the way. The spot is clearly visible in the 3rd photo. The lighting is 100% different from photo 1 and photo 3. He simply took the 1st photo picture a different way to lessen the spot.
