I decided about 3 or 4 months ago to start my own coin collection after sorting through my father-in-law's small hoard of coins. I was intrigued by his Franklin halves, and was told it would be a good set to start with, as there were no show stoppers, and I could get them as junk silver. So 3 months of visiting coin shops and asking for Franklins, I was down to 2 coins missing from the set. I visited my favorite coin store today, walked in and the guy says "I have something for you." He had purchased a bunch of Franklins and held them back for me, knowing I was close. So, after a brief search, I bought the 1953 and 1958 that made my first complete set! I am nearly 50 years old, but I was as happy as a kid. Now my other collection is wheat cents, so it may be a while before I get this feeling again, due to budget, but I will enjoy this today!

Congratulation on your first milestone.
You should frequent this forum, that's how I learned so much about coin collecting; and along the way I was able to make quite a few friends, get help from others, trade for coins I needs, and also bought quite a few coins for my collection. Once you meet the minimum requirements, you can start posting on your Want List (in the Buy/Sell/Trade section).
Have fun and enjoy your time.

Great start, Lincoln wheat's will be a challenge for sure considering your just starting now. I suggest you buying a few mixed date rolls of Wheaties for about $2 each from LCS or e-bay, start with that. then as your budget grows you can purchase the better dates individually. just do yourself a favor and collect only nice high grade circulated Lincolns, no hole fillers. Trust Me I've Been There.

I started my Wheat cent collection by purchasing a bag of 5,000 wheats from the coin shop. The first bag was solid, so I went back and bought the last bag and a half bag they had left. Of course those 2 were mostly 40's and 50's. But, I did end up with every date represented, and some very nice coins for the Dansco. I only lack 7 coins now, of course all key or semi-key dates.

Nice... I agree with jbuck, an eisenhower set is still cost effective to complete in higher grades and is poised to grow in value.

I'll add that you should try to choose all coins within the same grade range (like XF-40 to XF-45) and color. Color is important in this series because you can find some pretty highly graded coins that look like crap. Whey you show your Wheaties to someone who doesn't collect, you'll probably want them to be focused on how great the set looks as a whole. You don't want them looking at a set and thinking, what's wrong with that one? You'll end up spending a good amount of money on key dates, so do yourself a favor and buy a good holder to display your coins in. I'd suggest a Capitol Plastic holder (actually there are two for the series). Finally, it's best to buy the key dates certified. There are some fakes out there that are so good even coin dealers get fooled.

& I am around your age and I know the feeling you get when accomplishing a set as yours. I put together a Dansco Eisenhower set and I am currently working on a Susan B Anthony album, only missing the two expensive Type-2 proofs. Let us know your next venture.
