I wanted to fill my Dansco Slots for my basics...cents, nickels, quarters, 50c, Presidential, Native American, etc....so, bought the 2015 Proof set and the 2015 Uncirculated Mint Set from the Mint. Upon inspection, I have to say the Unc set is the crappiest I have ever encountered, with both mints showing extreme bag marks and excessive planchet chatter...on a 1 out of 10, this got a 1. The proof set not much better, with dust struck through lines on half the coins..I can tolerate a little bit, but, it's being returned also. So much for plan A. Plan B will be to just buy P-D-S-S sets for what I need from reputable buyers who send clean coins. I like blemish-free coins for my Dansco's. So, at least the Mint sends a free return shipping label, so, I'm not out 8 bucks per return packet as in past. Blemish-Free US Mint coins, especially PROOFS, seem to be about 10% these days..true first strike, pristine coins are hard to find..the Mint really needs to get this dust thing under control...those little reflective worm-shaped incuse lines just drive me bonkers... Sorry for your disappointment but many of the items from the Mint are minted in the hundreds of thousands and someone at the Mint can't use a loupe to go over every item to ensure a perfect item. I would go to a show and cherrypick some dealers stuff and negotiate a price.

I never really had high hopes for perfection, believe me...but, the quality really was sub-par this time. Yes..I prefer to hunt for my own blemish free coins..a good show is a great idea...although, some dealers get a little bent out of shape when I pull my loupe out...as long as I hand over cash, it tends to create smiles, rather than raised eyebrows...I'll buy my Dansco list coins first, then, cherrypick for varieties! Mine were not bad at all. Some marks here and there, but nothing major. And the proof sets were fine. Sounds like you just got a few bad sets. Try again.

Quote: Sorry for your disappointment but many of the items from the Mint are minted in the hundreds of thousands To this I say so what. Just because they have a huge market and sell literally tons to collectors does not mean that poor quality is acceptable. We're not paying face value for these coins which would still mean a profit for them on most of the coins. We're paying a premium which is at minimum twice over face. For this we should get more than the cheap packaging. Quote: and someone at the Mint can't use a loupe to go over every item to ensure a perfect item. I have sent back more items this year than ever. Not a single one required a loupe to see the flaw. All could be seen with a quick cursory glance. They either have nobody inspecting coins after packaging or send everything through anyway.

I never look at my album coins with a loupe. I just go for eye appeal when it comes to album coins. I am such a perfectionist, there isn't a coin ever produced that I could look at with a loupe and like. No one will ever look at the coins in MY albums with a loupe either... So if naked eye appeal is a 10, it doesn't matter if it's a 1 when you look at it under a loupe.
Make sense? It's like worrying over how sausage is made, or the FDA limit on how many rat hairs allowed per pound. Even though they are limited, you know they are there, and it's best just to focus on the end result. It tastes good. Or in the case of the albums, it looks good. Even coins that aren't all that under a loupe, can make for a really high end album. Just a thought.

After the fiasco the mint put me through with the 2011 ASE sets, and the lengths I went through to trying to get to the root of the problem, I know the mint really has the opinion of make a profit and be nice to people, but satisfaction is not a top priority. Their own empolyees told me as much on a couple of levels. When the many times I called and they said they would help if I gave them certain information, the next time I called they had no idea or record of the information. The thing is that I had the time to keep checking up on it that most people don;t b/c life gets in the way. I will still get the few pieces I order from them b/c I missed out when they cut the mintage of the 2012 silver proof sets abruptly and I had to pay a lot more to get the half. I admit its bittersweet b/c I hate sending them money, but love the half! When I got sets of the 2013 enhanced ASE, all of them went back the first time b/c of hair and all sots of particles that looked like dandruff inside the capsules (but only on the enhanced ones)! Not the norm to find in these...but discouraging nonetheless.

Hmm, I've run into this probably before, but with older sets. Probably just the mint being lazy.
