So after about 6 months of back and forth conversations with my bank they finally began ordering me boxes of half dollars. Ive done about a box a week for 5 months now.
Two weeks ago I'm told they are changing companies from whom they order their change. And that their might be a charge going forward.
I find out today that their is a charge.
Has anyone encountered this and were you able to resolve it. My frustration is that they are always telling me that its uncommon currency and that's why. But yet its still currency, right? how can a company charge a fee for one type of legal tender but not another. I could order dimes all day long and not be charged a dime.
I don't know. It just frustrates me. Should I change banks or try to pursue this one. I have been with this bank for 15 years.

I think that charging for boxes of coins is not uncommon. One of the banks I use flat out refuses to even order boxes or sell rolls of coins.

I understand what they mean- If they had a roll of double eagles and you asked for it for face, they wouldn't give it to you. However, I think half dollars are common enough that there shouldn't be a charge. I wouldn't think twice about spending a common clad half.

Here we go again. The bank is not there to support your coin roll hunting hobby. It costs them time and money to order it, receive it, place it in the vault and retrieve it. And then it costs them time and money to process the coin roll hunting dumps whether it's you doing it or someone else.

Tell you what, You drive, supply, and maintenance the truck that delivers them to the bank. For free.
It's not their job to help you find silver for free.

It's not their job to help you find silver for free. Well said. These kind of threads pop up every two weeks. People get mad when I say it screams "entitlement" yet that's exactly what it is.

To take it a step further, instead of realizing that the bank did you a favor for awhile, you complain the minute it doesn't go your way. Maybe I am old fashioned but this behavior is a bit disappointing to see.

Keep in mind that having money deposited with the bank (savings or checking, etc) is a choice on your part. Feel free to consider banking with another national named bank. Being unhappy with a banks services gives you the right to withdraw your deposits and move to another bank. That being said, the banks have to find the happy balance to keep customers happy but also to make money, if you have enough money in savings and/or checking and you tell them you are withdrawing it and switching banks - they may be willing to negotiate some, and give you a discount for repeat services, etc. because they want to keep you as a customer.

Just keep trying different banks. Sometimes newly-hired tellers will go the extra mile because they still have that "new job high" and want to make an impression. Some are more than happy to get rid of them instead of keeping the rolls or sending them off.

Maybe I am old fashioned but this behavior is a bit disappointing to see. I use dot have 3 pick up banks. Now I have 2. When the one bank told me they couldn't order coin for me anymore (it was only 2 boxes of halves a week compared to 4 boxes of halves from another brand and 8 boxes of halves and 2 boxes of nickels and cents from a 3rd brand) I came back the next day and brought them donuts as I had done in the past and thanked them for their service when they were able to order coin for me RATHER THAN throwing a tantrum and demanding to speak to management and swearing I would be pulling all of my money out of their brand if they didn't abide by my wishes.

As of now my bank has not charged me a fee, thank goodness. If the day comes, I will call all the banks/credit unions in my area for one that won't charge me and switch to them. John1

The actually don't care if you pull your money. You are costing them money in fees to their suppliers (the armored car company).
Don't let the free toaster hit you in the back on your way out... oh yeah, they don't do that anymore either...

Is this just a United States thing? I have never been charged fees for exchanging cash for boxes of coin here in Canada.

Funny you should mention that - my credit union gave me a free toaster and $150 cash for refinancing my ford...and dropped my payment by $20/mo. for the rest of the term. I love credit unions, I cancelled all five of my bank accounts last two years for excessive fees. Never a fee to order coin, but they made up for it elsewhere. Love the hobby, but cheaper to buy my silver outright sad to say.
