Hey guys, I wanted to share my best cherrypick to date. I picked this up last year on ebay for $20. The pictures were pretty bad and the coin had a lot of debris/dirt on it (way more than there is now). I was amazed how much the acetone/verdicare combo worked on it; I focused mostly on the obverse (had to use a toothpick) because that was the worst. I thought there was going to be corrosion underneath and surely a details coin. I may do another treatment on the reverse; at the time I didn't want to mess with it more than I had to, kinda scared. But I'm confident I could get the reverse looking like the obverse since the obverse use to be worse than the reverse. Would a TPG care with the current difference in dirt buildup and flag it as details (obverse vs reverse)?

Anyway, how would you rate her? This one is my pride and joy
I did some different lightings to show color/detail. It's an original brown color in hand. Thanks!

By the way, that is dust/hair on the ES of STATES.

Hi,

In an attempt to remain within the scope of this particular thread I opine that any procedure or material capable of more effectively dislodging any type of deep-seated crud is worth looking at.

...had to use a toothpick.

After delving into this subject a bit more one might possibly decree that select mammalian protuberances will supplant a pointed wooden shaft any day en route to that optimized/desired end result:

So as not to stray too far from the doubling issue at hand the only additional comment worth mentioning is that when placing an order for these things always request lengths of no less that two and one-half inches(2.5") which increases shaft rigidity and diameter for prolonged usage etc.

fyi,
mdpmedia

Nice pick up ! I found one on ebay but I wasn't the only one that spotted it. I also use a toothpick when working on my Indians. Just have to be careful.

NGC was lenient with this one. But you have a market full of individuals who only read the label and don't care about what is inside.

Congrats. NGC and PCGS both seem to be liberal with the keys, imo.

Other quotes say the same thing ...

Sorry guys, but when I bought a 1908-S Indian from Gimbels Department Store in 1963, a coin with this much of the "LIBERTY" was graded VG to Fine. That's what it should be, but "grade-flation" has lifted it to VF.

In the old days you needed a full "LIBERTY" to make Fine. Some of the letters could be weak or just outlined for a bare minimum Fine-12, but the word needed to show.

Now a coin that does not have all of the letters gets "VF."
This works to the benefit of collectors who have coins to sell and dealers who get windfalls. It works against any collector who is looking to buy coins because they get less for their money. In addition this coin has vertigras on the reverse, which would bring the grade down to VG with no "+" for the partial "LIBERTY."

If you want to fall in with this, go ahead. You are cutting the legs out from under your coin budget. I for one will try to stick with consistent standards until I'm planted. I am not alone. Dave Bowers has said the same thing.

BTW, that was one heck of a pick off, Mike1487. That is a scarce variety although it is getting more common all of the time with the new discoveries.
