Over the years I have hoarded a lot of old worn out Jeff nickels plus a few wheat cents too. I pulled the key dates for my circulation folders and albums. I'll keep the War Nickels since they are part silver. But, what to do with the rest? Nobody seems interested in the low grade coins anymore. Hate to just put them back into the wild. I keep thinking someone's grandkid will take up coin collecting and I can help them out.

I say you spend them. Never know, you might make the week of a collector with a circulation album and thought he'd never find that one in the wild or you just may spark the interest of a kid who gets it in change for a slurpee. I suggest spending them a few at a time at various gas stations and places where kids take their parents

There are a couple of Young Numismatic gatherings at some of the big shows that the CCF has a table set up at. You could always donate them.

Then hold on to them until that happens. I think the only reasons to not hold on to them are that you need the money or you need the space. I hold on to every nickel I get, hoping one day my son will want to search the box and fill some holes.

That's a great idea--now I'm gonna put together a couple rolls of filler pennies/nickels to donate for YNs. Now to find a YN gathering . . .

OK, maybe I'll get off my lazy derriere and check out a local coin club or two for this purpose . . . if I can find one with YNs. Here I come haystack, I know there's a needle in there somewhere! (kinda like coin roll hunting {grin})

I like the idea of donating. Or give them out (along with some candy so you don't get your house teepeed) at Halloween.

Or, there are people that hold copper pennies for their copper value, nickels could be held for their nickel content? Not much, but it's more than copper...

I'm in the process of hoarding all my old pennies and nickles.. not to make a buck but I hope when I do become a ripe ole age I may set up a flee market table or something of that nature and either give them to the kids as they come by or sell for face (like a door crasher) to those that stop by.

By then there will be a novelty that even in poor condition some of the coins will be over 100 yrs old...

I have rolls of cull Indian cents, and I spend s few whenever I can for the fun of it. I've had some remarkable responses at different stores, such as "Sir, we do not take coins from India or anywhere else" to a manager's request that I not bring in any more money like that. One gal asked if I had anything different, and so I perversely offered her a Canadian cent instead. She took it - true story.

Yeah, so far the response was about like I figured. While I don't need the cash, I'm getting ready to move, so getting rid of a few things would be good (although I have room for the coins in my man cave den). Maybe I'll look through them one more time. The box they are in hadn't been opened for at least 15 years. I remember pulling many of these coins from circulation during the 1970s and 1980s.

Nickels are 75% copper 25% nickel. It has been that way since 1866.

So many things to do with old coins.
1. Give them to kids on Halloween.
2. Ask at a local grade school if they would try to give to kids if interested in collecting coins.
3. Send to me.
4. Put in those Salvation Army pots on Christmas.
5. Take to an orphanage.
6. Send to me and I'll even pay postage.
See if you think about it, lots and lots of things to do with money.

Gyrene, I think everyone knows that, but thank you for the verification. I was referring to the value of the nickel content. Nickel is worth more than copper, and people hoard copper pennies for the value of the copper. He could hoard nickels for the value of the nickel (and copper).

just_carl - I dig - send them to me! Of course!
