Hey all, my brother found this one a couple of years ago in his spare change jar. Do you think it has any value? Thanks *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

It is a "war" nickel so it has silver value. The scratches on the reverse keep it from having much collector value IMHO. John1

Woo, this guy has seen some stuff! It is a War Nickel like John1 said, so it has some silver value. Cool find, though!

Look to the left at the red folder title " US coins & Currency". Then to US COIN FACTS, then to Jefferson nickels, and you will have some good basic information about this War Nickel, too.

Don't forget to check for this: An overdate error is worth more - maybe 20.00 or so (?)

Thanks guys I'll hold on to it since it technically isn't mine and who knows when I or my brother might see another one!
Moxking, thanks for the link very interesting and useful info!
Earle42, I looked for that overdate but no luck. There appears to be black crud or tarnish around that area but I heard cleaning it isn't a good idea?

Correct. Cleaning is bad. Conserving a coin is good. Knowing the difference is important.
Most folks here will give a coin destined for a 2x2 flip a soak in 100% acetone to loosen crud, remove any finger oils deposited while CRH. Some use a very soft bristled toothbrush to facilitate removal of the gunk (quite common on wartime nickels).
It is worth saving. I'd even recommend getting a nickel folder or two to start filing out the dates you find or come across at your LCS. Fun to fill in a date and learn something about it in the process.
Good luck!!
