Hi, I think I have become addicted to this new hobby. I have two inherited collections from parents. I have been reading about them, and am learning as much as possible. I came across this Mercury dime and do not know what this error is called.

to CCF. I am not good with Mercs but looks like staining or enviramentle damage. Not an error.

To me it looks like something ate away at the obverse -- so maybe something acidic got on it.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the hobby!

Appears to be staining, I'm sure you could get it off with acetone.

Could it be dried up tape, gunk, glue or bubble gum? Acetone may dissolve or loosen it up. Thanks, Doug.

to our large community...

I would strongly recommend you purchase the two recent Cherry Picker Guides and a good 10x triplet (black if checking gemstones and Diamonds) and start looking for the top die varieties...

I must warn that it is more addicted then any opiate's, and you need to ween yourself off slowly when you leave the hobby...

I'm addicted to error currency and I now check every serial number and match it up to the notes Plate Position on both COPE & LEPE overprints...

Tip ~ if you have a spouse and find anything valuable, avoid mentioning it as it could bite you where you don't want to be bit (family board) should you divorce 20 or 30 years from now... Spouses don't forget & tell their Lawyer they own half the value... I only mention this because after 34 years of marriage, my now ex wanted everything, if she could have taken half my shadow, she would...

Now go enjoy hunting, and if you have any Morgan silver dollars, you will enter the World of VAMS (most addicting of die variety collecting & very time consuming)..
