I came across this recently as I was picking out some junk silver. Would anyone like to theorize what happened to this poor quarter? 100 years' worth of disintegration underground? A shipwreck? A chemistry experiment conducted too close to someone's coin collection? Its weight is, quite remarkably, still 6.23 grams (.01 grams more than the standard weight for this issue). For 12.5x face, I couldn't resist having a truly unique conversation piece... Edited by Earendil 09/25/2015 7:23 pm

New pocket piece, perhaps?

Quote: New pocket piece, perhaps? That's actually something that I've been considering! It's so incredibly far gone that I would never have to worry about inadvertently damaging it or affecting its eye appeal in some way (as is the case with some of my other pocket pieces)...

Quite honestly, I think the eye appeal for this one is at its minimun. Considering you bought it at melt, perhaps it's worth wearing down it a bit. I would have, only if it wasn't so small!

If it weights near normal then I don't think anything ate away at it,if that was the case it would weight less. Maybe a real bad case of road rash. Looks kinda neat. John1

The way to deal with coins like this Put it out of its misery and bury it.

Barnacles. Yup, maybe barnacles. Or some sort of candy coating. I would have snapped it up in an instant. Nice!

Oh, sorry, that's what I meant: that there's literally nothing I could consciously or unconsciously do to this coin to affect its condition in a negative way (since it's quite literally junk silver). That's what's holding me back! I have a few quarter pocket pieces already, and am always afraid I'll lose them. The "safe" size for me are half-dollars, silver dollars, or Silver Eagles. However, I've been carrying around a bent Mercury dime for months now, and it's still kicking around! Maybe there's some hope in that respect. Yes, that was my conclusion as well when I saw that it hasn't actually lost any weight. Of course, since this coin's circulation period predates cars by quite a bit, could we maybe attribute its condition to some kind of carriage or train mishap? Quote: Barnacles. Yup, maybe barnacles. I figured it was a cheap way to pick up a comparatively early U.S. silver coin with a whole lot of character. I passed on it the first time I saw it, but went back in the next day to pick it up. I decided that I wasn't going to see any kind of 1800s-era quarter for melt value again anytime soon.
