I purchased a collection, with higher grade Half Cents, and misc other coins. I need opinions on this 1894-P Morgan that I have questions on its Authenticity. The heirs of this collection allowed me to snap some shots so I could further investigate. I possibly will make an offer which might include me sending it out to a TPG if the membership here thinks it has a shot.

Based on my research, the date looks good. My concerns are, could it be an 1894-O removed mint mark? The coin is lower grade and has a lot of marks,I could not clean the area which would expose the 2 reverse die markers since I do not own the coin.

What do the members here think? I appreciate any opinions! Thanks! RK

It's no doubt a genuine Morgan dollar and the date position looks correct for the Philly business strike. Without comparing the minute pick ups for the reverse die, There ain't no saying for sure.

I am not seeing anything screaming fake or altered. I would wait for more responses.

Yeah I hear you Dave, I wanted sooooo badly to ask if I could remove a little dirt that would expose the Die Markers.

That may be my last recourse, cleaning very carefully the small area below the eagle's left leg.
Rest in Peace

Also look at the top of "IGWT" for doubling.

I agree with Dave the coin is a genuine Morgan, but the area around the mint mark would give me concern with the scratch and possible cleaning in the area to make the removed mint mark blend in. If I could not confirm the die marks on the left leg or some other markings of a 94 P, I would pass.

I would pass.....

....unless I got a very good price AND a money-back guarantee that it would come back as genuine from ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. Problem-free VG examples have sold on Heritage for around $700; if you could get this one for maybe $500 with that return guarantee it might be a good buy.

If you've already purchased the collection then send it in to ANACS for a quick authentication and grading. If it comes back "ok" then go give the family some more money.

That is a tough one.

I would not want to buy it, with out knowing for sure.
Unless I got it for common price.

If I did have it .... I would have to send it to be graded.

I called the seller today and told them that I would foot the cost of sending it in. If it comes back no good, I am out. If it comes back Genuine I would make a fair offer based on the grade and less my costs to TPG the coin.

The seller is going to drop off the coin at the end of the week and I will try and see if the die markers are there before I decide if it is worth sending it in.

ANACS is running a 10 coin promotion and I believe free return shipping for $119. so maybe I can fit this one in.

I did not buy the coin, I bought others from them.

I think it is a fair offer. what do you guys and gals think?

I don't see any red flags, it looks legit. No tooling marks appear to be in the mint mark area, just some normal nicks found on a coin with this much circulation. Definitely get it slabbed, well worth the money on this one.

Sounds fair to both you and the seller. Good luck!

To me, the mint mark area is worrisome. Nevertheless, looking forward to seeing the result........
