Its interesting for sure.... Would need to XRF it before paying $500 for it lol. I have dealt with that seller before and seemed like a good guy, so I'm inclined to believe he found it in a roll.

I would want to know if it is magnetic and what the weight is...
Seems a bit pricy to take the plunge, especially since it is full collar and exact size....

A sintered Canadian dime possibly - interesting. Not sure its 500.00 worthy though.

ok, guys I have seen dimes like this, every so often, I get a roll from the mint (plastic wrapped) 2014 or 2015, and there is one that is black. (I have seen 3 or 4)
I had posted before if there was something to this, and got little or no response.

I'm not seeing a black dime however I do see a dime perhaps missing some of its nickel finish/plating.

But it is a three-ply plating process. Nickel, copper and nickel - if the nickel plating process was deficient, you would see copper... the only thing I can think of is almost _all_ the multi-ply plating layers are missing, and the dark colour is from the steel planchet.

When I enlarge the photo I can see a copper tone around the rim. Is it possible that it may be weakly diffused plating but not to the extent of the example you posted?

I made an offer on the coin, and bought it. After a toluene bath (instead of acetone, in case it is copper rich), it will have an appointment with the SEM and XRF later this month in my lab at work. If it is something other than a legit plating (or off-metal) error, the seller has agreed that I can return it... (not that I didn't already have that option with PayPal).
Worst case scenario, I will have learned something new about these "black dimes", and get my money back. Best case scenario, I will have something cool to write about in Errorscope, and a neat modern anomaly...

Good its a win win looking forward to hearing about this one. I was wondering if it didn't get its proper bath between plating's.

Follow-up on this coin. Well, the XRF and SEM at my lab said it was a normal multi-ply plated 10c. It weighed the same. So I sent it to PCGS, along with a bright BU "reference coin" and PCGS agreed with me that it was definitely anomalous. I am not sure I agree with them calling it an Improperly Annealed Planchet - but given its lovely dark colour, thicker, copper-coloured rims, weaker collar strike and the grade, it does have a certain eye appeal to it... This is definitely one of those coins that requires certification to sell it, but worth it in my opinion. http://www.PCGS.com/cert/33950458
