Hi I live in Tampa Florida and have a small collection of coins that I am wanting to get rid of that my grandfather left me. Most of them were purchased from the Morgan Mint it seems. Could anyone recommend a place for me to take them in Tampa that won't try and scam me? Thx!

If you have a record of what was paid for each coin from MM- ignore it. The Morgan Mint is a telemarketer type operation and their coins are hideously overpriced

If you can take decent quality close-up photos or scans, we can try to give you a value estimate

Well, I'm not much of a photographer, but I would be willing to try though if anything from this list would be worth while. I plan on taking these to a local coin shop as soon as someone or here recommends one for me. If someone would be kind enough and could take the time to let me know what I should expect to receive for each of these. I would be very great full. All of these are in some sort of special packaging and most of them come with stamps as well. With Certificates from the "First Commemorative Mint", "The American Historic Society" and the "Morgan Mint". Anyway, here is the list...

1961 Proof Set
1962 Proof Set

@ amac44 If you think any of them would be worth hanging on to, please let me know, I know nothing about coins or stamps or collecting in general. I'm not really all that interested in getting into coins either, I know that must sound like blasphemy on a site such as this. I'm just being honest though and it seems like a shame for me to have all these coins laying around and not even appreciation them, which is why I would like someone who cares about coins to have them instead. I'm all for setting up my future and investing, just not with coins or collectibles. If anyone would like to see scans of any of these coins, then I will scan any coins upon request. Thanks Again - Cameron

Just on a quick and simple search of several of your Morgans alone, I can only suggest you take your time when seeking guidance and get the advice and guidance from some of the renowned collectors on in this forum.

If you're really interested in divesting yourself of that collection, one approach may be to first determine which are your most valuable coins and ensure that if you're going to sell the entire collection as a lot, you have a fixed value for the most valuable coins, the entirety of the collection notwithstanding.

Also, there are so many newer collectible coins that it's hard to say why the newer coins are part of your collection; e.g., were there not many made? Is it a variety coin for that year? etc. Is there any accompanying notation or notes about the newer coins?

To me, it's untenable to think about inadvertently selling coins worth more than $500 as part of a collection of many other coins worth ten times less.

This is solely my perspective after having stopped collecting coins for 20 years and only recently got back into the mix with a collection that weighs around 1000 pounds. If I took the advice I'm giving to you about singling out the most valuable coins, I might be left with 900 pounds of coins worth face value to $30. Then what?

I hope you can take and post some pictures....I'd love to see the 1886-O and 1897-O

Jim

If you're willing to put in the time investment, you'll do MUCH better on ebay listing the coins and sets individually than you will if you just hand them off to a random broker. Keep in mind that any shop you bring the coins to is going to offer you a lower price than they are worth...they want the ability to resell them at a profit.

When I was looking to sell $600 face value 40% silver half dollars, I searched for places that bought coins online. One of them was a big coin outfit in Florida- his quote was less than amusing, they all were except https://www.unitedwebuyitall.com The dealers here don't pay squat and charge a mint.
I agree ebay may be your best bet but time consuming. Hope this helps- I am not advocating them just passing on who I used and it worked good for ME. When the check arrived there was a flyer that said what all they buy- they buy it all. Hope everything works out for ya. Mark

Howdy Phlieger, and welcome to the forum. I don't think anyone will take offense to you not being interested in this as a hobby. Most if not all here are just pleased that you sought the help of knowledgeable folks to even try to liquidate. Having said that, if you're in no immediate need of the money for the coins, I think it would be wise to do a little research with the folks here to come up with a decent value for what you have. Yopu can probably get a good estimate on the collection within a month easy.

Also keep in mind, that the owners here, Bobby and Susan, AKA Mom and Dad, do consignments. I can't speak for whether or not this would be something they would take on, but from an ebay perspective, you're not going to get better exposure and top dollar than through their listings in my opinion.

Depending on the condition of some of those Morgans alone, you could have some high dollar coins in the bunch. Considering these are probably the most collected of all dollar coins, posting some pics or scans of them in the grading section would be nice....

The Morgan Mint? I'm afraid the scam has already occured. Even if you get the market value for your coins it will still be considerably less than what your grandfather paid for them.

I agree with the above advise. Research and ebay is the way to go if you have the time and consignment is probably your best bet if you don't. It's just like the decision to go with a stock broker or an online brokerage firm for your investments.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I have done a lot of transactions with Dale's Coins in Dunedin, FL , which is just north of Clearwater on the way to Honeymoon/Caladesi Islands, when I am in the Tampa area on business. You should be able to Google map them...that's how I found them. They are really nice and even though I have never sold to them I would suggest giving them a shot over the other shops in the area. I even do orders over the phone with them with great success.

BTW that's where I got the counterfeit 3 Center Prethen has!
