I'm thinking VF-35, maybe a 40, could make it through.

VF-35 details, looks like some rim damage was repaired and the coin was cleaned.

I'll say EF-40 Details. also a possible professional cleaning at one time.

I think that is a nice coin, one that would fit right into my Dansco.
The color is off, I think more white balance then how the coin looks in the picture. I am thinking the 2X2 should be more bright white, so I feel the coin color is off too.
Knowing that 1916 - 1920 WLH's have less details than 1921 - 1947 WLH's, I think this coin could be high VF to low XF. There are a few hits that would bother me, But not enough to stop me from buying a coin like this.

Thanks for the input. I'm also thinking vf30-xf40-ish, cleaned, with a few small rim bumps (by T in LIBERTY obverse, around 9:00 reverse). IndianGoldEagle, I'm curious about the rim damage that looks repaired, where is that? What am I looking for there?

I think detail does make EF-40, but this is unfortunately a problem coin. The wide, shallow rim bruises would bother me. Liberty shows hits on arm and hand and there are noticeable scratches in the reverse field. I don't see any definite sign of repairs but the cleaning looks pretty obvious in these images.
PCGS values the 1916-S at $700 in EF-40 but this piece should be steeply discounted.

I'm (with all due respect) slightly perplexed as to the high marks this coin is receiving from forum members. How can this be above VF30? Am I missing something?
