Ok .. I am sure I have to many sets going at the same time. But a lot of my purchases are based on what I see in local LCS's. But most weeks I also have several coins being watched on ebay. My favorite sets seem to be 7070, Morgan's, Lincoln and Washington quarters. Now the problem. What do you do when you locate, or have the opportunity to purchase more than one of coin or coins, that you have been wanting. Of course part of the problem is not having the funds to purchase them all. For example, I have been waiting for a large amount of silver dimes to come into a LCS, was suppose to come in last Friday, but looks like it will be next Friday. Really want to complete a 50 roll box this year. At another LCS I saw a 1922 no D strong reverse NGC F15. I was not really planning on buying a 1922 no D, but with it sitting there, it is hard not to want it. It is the last Lincoln I need to complete my Lincoln Dansco. And then there is always the ebay coins. Watching 1981 S TY2 SBA (last needed to complete SBA Dansco) 1903 O Morgan (one of five needed to complete Morgan set) I am curious how others decide on which coins they will buy next.

I scroll ebay or check my LCS and if I see something I like, I buy it. I've never been a fan of completing sets so I just buy what looks nice at the time.

I too would go with the hardest to get coins. Especially if that somewhat rarer coin finishes a set for you! So with that in mind I would go 1. if one or two coins finishes a set or 2. the rarest/priciest ones. But then again... these are both trumped by if I see something that is too good to pass up price-wise. Even if I don't need it, if I can buy it and resell it for certain gain, I would jump on it in order to fund the other purchases.

I have a list of items that I search for on ebay and then wait to snipe for bargains. At the LCS it is more of what he has in stock lately. Slim pickings of late. If there are multiple items more so than funds, I go for the best value for the dollar. Kind of like the NFL draft when your needs aren't there or you have few needs, you draft the best athlete available.

As for your predicament, I would go with the wheatie.
Finishing a set is always great. If it fits in, that is the biggest set you can finish today so finish it, but that could just be the Finnish in me speaking.
Good luck in whatever path you pick.

I have a couple different areas that interest me. Took me a year to figure out what direction I wanted to take. I know have a Au-BU 7070 going,BU Wheat toner album, and world gold coins. I tend to stay on one album for a little while then I will switch it up when I get bored. The 7070 is a perfect album for being "bored". YOu can find that new series youll like without even knowing it ./

Minus the "scroll ebay" part, this basically. (That said, I am a fan of assembling sets - just not of completing them, because it's hard to find a set where the last few coins won't be unaffordable. I have no problem with a "complete" "set" that has a few coins missing due to sheer rarity.) Though, to be honest, I've had much less opportunity to visit local coin stores lately.

It sounds as though stacking may be cramping your collecting. We all know collecting coins can be a terrible investment but stacking can be a very good investment if bought low and sold at or near a high for a healthy profit. Do you plan to sell your stacks when silvers recovers? If not you are tying up your collecting funds. As for collecting, I too, have way too many series going at once. My Lincoln 8100 lacks the 5 keys as well as 3 semi keys, Walking halves I need the 21's, 38-S and '16-S. Mercury dimes I need the '16-D and '21's as well as a couple of scattered dates. Washington quarters, I need several '30's D and S coins. My circulated Morgan collection is only 53 of 95 and has slowed considerably due to being very picky and the list goes on. Add on to that I have second and third collections in Library of Coins albums started to house my duplicates. Add to all this I collect 1878-S, 1883-O and 1904-O Morgan dollars by the VAM number. My next purchase is usually decided by sticking my wet finger in the air and clicking on a saved search on e-bay. If nothing excites me I move to the next.

I'll go to a small show knowing what I want to buy. but I would have to say I wind up with an impulse buy that had nothing to do with what I really wanted. But I don't mind because I'm working on about 10 different sets at one time. I KNOW, I KNOW, it's not a good strategy but I just love all U.S. coins. Not to mention I get bored if just working on one set that I can't finish because of those killer keys.

I can be the worst impulse buyer, which I am OK with because I surprise myself most of the time.
My collection is coins dated '82 so it's rather open ended for US or World. But my priority is the harder to find and I love the thrill of the chase. When going to shows, I am asked what I'm looking for and I just say "dunno, whatcha got with an 82?" I still don't have the no P dime or no FG half dollar varieties because I think they are overpriced for something that is always available, which ruins the thrill of the chase for me. But then sometimes a type coin I haven't seen in years comes up and suddenly I overpay for it, but think it's the coolest thing ever.

I have a list of coins I am looking for and a budget. The budget is a rolling budget - ie what doesn't get spent in a particular month rolls over to the next month so I can afford mo expensive coins if I let it build up. I can also go negative on the budget but have to eventually "pay myself back".
I occasionally will see something that I really like that is not on the list and buy it, but with the realization that it delays other purchases needed for the sets I am focusing on.
I'd buy everything if I didn't have a budget.

I'd buy everything if I didn't have a budget to eat and pay those annoying utility bills and taxes. But seriously, most of what I favor does not fall easily into the 'set' category. And no one makes albums for pre-1800 coins. Also one never knows what is going to show up at local estate sales. So most of my coin buying falls under the category of 'impulse purchase'. I am also deeply involved in another collectible hobby that tends to soak up a significant portion of the budget that could be directed toward coins.

I despise set collecting, so my answer would be a bit biased. You can invest in bullion or a key date, so I would pick the one that will appreciate more as I would have no regrets selling either of them for a profit in the future. Now a nice type coin will be harder to sell as I will enjoy owning it more.

What is that other collection if you don't mind? Joking, but from your signature pic I am guessing it involves Pac Man or Mrs. Pac Man. That one coin looks like it is ready to eat those three dots.
