Just like on a 1918/17D buffalo, is there a way to tell on either of them if the date is wiped? I highly doubt it, but it's worth a try to ask. I know they are unlike DDO's, like you can actually ID if a 1916 buff is a DDO or not because of the feathers, you can see significant doubling.

What about raising a date on a SLQ? Any possible way? I have so many questions...so much pops into my head when I think about it long enough, lol.

There is no way that I know of to restore dates on silver coins.

Most likely there are specific die markers on 18/17 quarters used to help authenticate specimens. Maybe one of the SLQ experts will chime in.

Muriatic acid, one of the more preferred acids for use on dateless Buffalo nickels, for example, just sits inertly on SLQs.

Die markers are your best bet on these type of PM coins.

All 20th century series "overdates" are actually Class 3 doubled dies(Design Hub Doubling).

There actually IS a way to restore a date on a Standing Liberty quarter using household materials. All you will need are hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. You should create a mix of 65% hydrogen peroxide and 35% vinegar. Put the coin in, and wait for a few hours. It works almost every time, but it leaves the coin very dark and not very appealing to look at. The reverse is half dark, half light, making it even worse, but if you feel the urge to know what the date of your SLQ is, this is an effective way to do it.

Agree that will probably do the job. It's like a cure for cancer that works but also kills the patient.

Basically. The coin's dark stuff (corrosion?) can be easily rubbed off. However, unless it is a 21, 23-S, 18/7-S, or a 27-S, it probably has no value besides bullion.

I personally would add to these the 19D, 19S, 20D, 24D and 'maybe' the 16.

Folks, I know I am a few years late and a dateless SLQ short, but I am here to tell you it CAN be done... and I took pictures to prove it!
Every forum thread on the subject of revealing dates on slicked silvers seem to say the same thing... no, it can't be done... so, hopefully, these pictures can change that.
All you need to do is drop a little silver testing acid on the date area, wait 30 seconds (over a plugged sink), rinse quickly and snap a pic. Be quick... the results don't last long unless you wet the coin again.
Before and after pics for disbelievers:

As you can see... no visible date, whatsoever...

suddenly, 1924!

with just a hint of a reeded edge...

I hope this helps someone. Just trying to set the record straight. You CAN get details on just about any silver coin with a little nitric acid. It will leave a little discoloration in the areas you treat, but the coin was probably not worth much numismatically in the first place.

That's fascinating, nice demonstration. I wonder why you can only see the image when it's still wet?
