Skunk streak stopped at two boxes. Tonight's box yielded a 1950p.

 But as he mentions, things coming in bunches or multiples anyway after breaking the drought. David (nickelsearcher) did the same thing with the 1950D which was his nemesis coin to complete the album. Funny how that works! |

Even if I already had. 50-D, I'd be happy to find more. Here's what you do: When you get a box, have someone else replace a random coin in the box with a 50-D. You technically would find it, so then you start getting more.  |

I'm just wondering, how does one skunk on nickel boxes? It's not like quarters or dimes where there is no silver, or pennies where they are solid rolls. Does skunking on a nickel box mean there were no pre-64 nickels?

2 boxes today. Box 1 had 3 2009's, a Netherlands that was an ender in the past as it has roller marks, a nice 1960 and 1962, and another 1912 V nickel. When I found the one last week before I flipped it over to look at the reverse for a mintmark I asked myself I wonder if it is a D or an S. I was caught off guard when it actually was. Every time I find a 1938 or 1939 I always hope there is a mintmark on it when I flip it over. Rarely is there one. So tonight I asked myself I wonder it is an S. It wasn't  Box 2 had another 2009, a Bahamas, 2 Canadian, a 1942 silver, and a nice 1957 and 1959.  |

Is the first Canadian in the bottom picture a 63 or a 64? Both can be found in coin orientation (rather than medal), which is quite pricey. The 1964 also has an extra water line variety, which is worth some money as well. I think it would be worth checking.

My son and I only save the following nickels:
silver
buffalo
liberty
mintage under 10 million
and we each have a Canadian collection also
So if we don't get any of the first four groups, and we don't get any Canadians that we don't already have, it's a skunk box.

Jack - you've had terrific success throughout. Love that V nickel! Skunk is a relative term and conditional to the point one might be at with collecting. Every box will have something though. OK, Box 28 results - 1936 Buffalo 30s - (3) 38, (2)39 40s - (8) 41s, 43P 50s - (12) 58D upgrade (AU) AU/BU - (8) Foreign - 2 Beaver, 1 Singapore Error/Variety - 4 clash 2009 - 1 No progress on the 2015 project. Light yields, but a decent box despite (good mix). Hoping the next order produces a few hits though as this will likely wrap up the 2015 CRH season and the project. Here are a few of the fun finds.   |

I have been getting 2 boxes of nickels a week for at least the last 3 years if not more now. It wasn't until January 1st this year that I found my first 1938S and it was actually high grade to bring my search down to only a 1950D from the wild left. When I first started even finding a common date hole filler was exciting. And finding 1 NIFC half in a box was not a skunk. Now years later and millions of dollars searched into it and having reached all of the highs there is little that still excites me other than a clipped planchet or railroad rim or Cud or the occasional doubled die half or proof. Like I said I do 2 boxes of nickels a week but nothing has really excited me enough to post as of late except for a few buffalos in a box or the recent V nickels. It is always exciting to find an UNC from 1938-1950 but once you crack out your album number 1 or even the second string or 3rd string and find out you already have one in all 3 that is nicer it really rains on your parade and motivation to keep searching. My 1st string Jefferson album from circulation as of the 1st of this year. I think I have found 1 or 2 upgrades since then but it is really hard to find an upgrade in the wild at this point. https://goccf.com/t/194022#194022 |
