I took the time today to provide a lengthy reply to a new CCF member who is interested in collecting the theme of ships on coins ... of which there are likely thousands of world-wide examples.
My reply to the new member, however, caused me to consider if we have ever discussed the five classic silver commemorative issues with ships as a main motif in this forum.

This thread fills that gap (if it even existed) ... and I'll share below poor photographs of all five ... without very much additional commentary.
I decided to use examples from my MS type set ... one circulated example at the end ...
1921 Pilgrim Tercentenary Half Dollar .. PCGS MS66/CAC
Tremendous image of the
May Flower fighting the high seas on her maiden voyage.
Also available as a 1920 dated coin.
1924 Huguenot-Waloon Tercentenary Half Dollar - PCGS MS66/CAC
Here we have an image of the ship
Niuew Nederland carrying the religious objectors to the new world.
1935 Hudson Sesquicentennial Half Dollar - PCGS MS66/CAC
IMHO Chester Beach design for this coin is the most outlandish (funky) coin ever issued by the US Mint ... great fun.
This shows the good ship
Half Moon captained by Henry Hudson on her voyage of discovery up the Hudson river.
1936 Delaware Tercentenary Half Dollar - PCGS MS66/CAC
The Old Swedes Church shown on the obverse is one of the classic commemorative sites that I have visited.
The reverse features the
Kalmar Nyckel ... the ship carrying the Swedish colonists to the new land in 1638.
1936 Long Island Tercentenary Half Dollar - PCGS MS65/CAC
The last of our five classic silver commemorative with ships ... no identification of the specific ship that I know of.
Just for fun ... I also have all five of these coins in my PCGS certified circulated set ... will show only one as an example of how these treasured coins honestly wear.
1920 Pilgrim - PCGS FR02
Any fans of ships out there?
Enjoy - David
