I was cleaning out my closet and stumbled upon a box containing 2 long forgotten Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary sets. I intended to open or have them graded years ago, but here we are. How time flies. Now that the dust has settled, my question to this distinguished group is thus; Should I just open the box already and enjoy or have them certified/graded first? It appears the second option is still available: http://www.PCGS.com/News/PCGS-Certi...ersary-CoinsOn a side note, it strikes me as odd that the box from the mint weighs 6 pounds (as indicated by a shipping sticker, so it could be less). That got me to wondering if perhaps the mint shipped me 5 sets instead of 2. It wouldn't be the first time they've made a shipping error. Upon receipt, the weight was not a red-flag, so maybe these are extra heavy sets?

Cool. I suggest getting them graded or just sell the sealed box on ebay once the 30th anni stuff comes out while the irons hot

The wooden cases are pretty heavy for these sets and I wouldn't be surprised if they are 2-3 pounds each (including the 5 oz of metal). When I get home tonight I'll get my set out and drool over it, er, weigh it for you.
What a nice surprise to find!

Very nice find TreeMonkey! Yes I agree 5 sets would weigh way more than 6 pounds with those heavy boxes.

I think that the "sealed box" phenomenon has passed. If you waited long enough on ebay, you may get someone to bite for an additional 10%. With all the counterfeiting and thievery on ebay these days, I highly doubt someone is going to spend that kind of money just on your word that there are not 6 pounds of rocks in there. And if they do open the box to verify the contents, then they are not going to pay a premium for a sealed box. As far as grading goes, the only premium you will get is if all the coins grade at MS/PF 70. A slight premium can be had for mixed 69's and 70's. The cost of getting both sets graded on the chance that you may get a combined 70 set is a long shot. One 68 in either set takes the value back down to raw. IMHO

Nice find. What I've done in the past when buying two sets was to send one for grading and keep the other.

Thanks for everyone's input! Feeling lucky so I plan to submit for grading and hope for the best (but really the best part will be seeing them for the first time whatever the grade). That is unless I lose track of them on my closet floor again . Thought about selling the sealed box but with no ebay history and not enough posts to sell them here, that's not an option I care to explore. Besides, I really want to see them! And thanks for checking the weight of these boat anchors. Indeed, there are only 2 sets. Rats.

Oh yeah, I just stumbled on to this pile of $800 and some change I set on the night stand 4 or 5 years ago too. Pffffft. Chump change! I understand being a collector of certain types and grades of coins requires deep pockets. But how does one forget about a set or coin of that value?

It happens. Last week I was relocating some stock and found a sealed 2006 Annie ASE single 3 coin set that I had forgotten about. Not exactly a $600 purchase but could be that now...

I "forget about" certain things I've purchased over the years for my collection and then stumble across them in my safe during some random reorganization effort. I'm pretty sure I have opened everything that comes through my door though.
