I have been a Top Rated Plus ebay seller for several years now dealing exclusively in coins. And in a sneaky email I discover that I have lost my hard earned Top Rated Plus rating until I comply with their new regulations that relate specifically to all precious metal and bullion coins!

As of May 1, 2016, ebay requires that sellers offer buyers of all precious metal and bullion coins a....wait for it......(30) THIRTY(30) day, no questions asked, money back guarantee as their new and improved return policy that they believe will attract more buyers as well as make them feel better about their initial purchase!(Waaaaah!)

There is so many things wrong with this policy that it should be illegal!
(I'm quite sure you could make a decent living off of this genius plan of theirs if you were a shady criminal with little or no conscience.)

I'm not even going to go there, I just thought y'all needed to know since a lot of CCF Members buy and sell on there. I wish I could cherish the good times, but there are none. Only stress, drama, a few new medical conditions and feeling of their deep grab into my bank account between the 12-15 of every month to retrieve their "FAIR" share of my hard earned money!

Feel free to take a stab at this one if you like.
I would love to hear others thoughts and opinions on this.

I just know that I'm going to tell them to take their fancy badges & listing titles and shove them where the sun don't shine and I'm pulling up stakes, closing the doors and severing all ties with this two bit horse and monkey show that has had one hand in my paypal account and the other one in my pocket since day one!

END RANT..........

I have been buying from ebay for a while.

While I do enjoy the fact that there is a money back guarantee on a lot of coins, I didn't know they made it mandatory to sellers.

I have never returned a coin however. If I don't like what I got I don't buy from seller again. Simple as that.

I did have more confidence in the ones who do offer this guarantee. Figured they had to have confidence in what they were selling to do this. Now I know better.

Thank you for informing me of this.

P.s I don't think you should have to give money back for precious medal bullion. These are what they are and should be bought as silver. If you willing to pay more and regret it later not sellers fault. Bullion is Bullion. If fake(as in plated)that is different story. Plated coins should be stated as such and ALOT of them aren't.

There seems to be a lot of new 'sell your stuff' apps com8ng out. Not the global access of ebay but probably good enough to make money. I suggest looking into other avenues of selling.

ebay is ebay and makes changes that they "think" buyers want to hear. As a seller, you have ZERO input. That's just the way it works and if you don't like it then you close up shop and move on.

I had an unquestioned 30 day return policy for at least two years before they made it mandatory. During the whole show I had on ebay from 1999 to 2015 I could count the number of returns I had on one hand. For me, I don't think it would make any difference if I offered no returns or a 90 day return.

I haven't listed anything in well over six months and currently have no plans to list anything in the foreseeable future.

I just like to watch ebay as it self destructs from the inside out.

I've been off ebay for a year and it feels good. Take a deep breath, think about going to a local coin show. Buy a table and do coin business a few weekends a year. Join a coin club and sell in their meeting auctions. If this is too low volume for you consider a partnership in a local coin shop or booth at the antique mall. I find I buy far fewer but much better coins in person.

I bet every dealer here with a storefront could tell stories about chargebacks and disputes. This is bringing ebay in line with the world of credit card policies. It was nice while it lasted, but it was inevitable.

The majority of ebay buyers are not sophisticated, and can take some time to detect counterfeits and misrepresentations. When they do, they go to the credit card company or to the police, which is worlds of hurt for sellers.

I will certainly never be "Top Rated". The notion the customer can buy gold or silver, watch for the price to drop, then recover his investment up to 30 days - or keep it only if profitable. How much silver & gold is being bought on the site by their insiders who create such policies?

Such a scheme to avoid losses due to drops in bullion prices would require just the right timing. Weekly or monthly DOWNWARD swings in the price would have to coincide with the PURCHASE date plus 30 days. I personally think this would result in a limited opportunity for those who might want to "take advantage" of this situation.

If every buyer that ever bought bullion on ebay returned their purchase during the 30 days after purchase solely because the price went down, I would imagine that after a short while, there would be no more bullion sellers on ebay.

In reality, however, I suspect this won't happen often. Most people trying to profit on bullion price swings by buying items through ebay probably are looking for a longer holding period than 30 days.

Ebay's policies make an exclusion to the 30 day return period for listings under the category of bullion.

THANK you, D0ubl3Eagle.

Folks, I feel ya, I have been gritting my teeth ESPECIALLY this month about ebay's methods of favoritism. But think, ebay may go out of style with sellers, but it will never go out of style for buyers. If all the classiest and most self-respecting coin sellers leave ebay, what is that going to leave? That gap will be filled, and it could potentially spell disaster for the next generation of coin collectors in charge of today's common collections.

What I am trying to say is, there has to be mentors. If there are no sellers on ebay who are trying to maintain a standard and set an example for numismatist etiquette, many who continue to buy coins on ebay who lack collecting experience won't know any better. That remains a risk until collectible coin auctions on ebay can't make people money.

Which could be possible if some ambitious tech-savvy numismatist successfully launched an auction site for coins only that could be more popular than ebay, open to the average seller. Which would be fine with me, my sales have suddenly halted since ebay's May 1st overhaul.

So let me get this right. I can buy a monster box of ASE's for say $9k and if silver drops in 3 weeks and a monster box then costs $8k. I can return my $9k box, buy a new one for $8k and pocket my losses back.

Or, I buy a coin hoping for a high grade. I send the coin to PCGS express and even with shipping times I now have the ability to ensure I can always return the coin if I don't get the grade. And hey, if I scratch it cracking it out its their loss

Holy crap! A new illicit cottage ebay business is being born by regulation once again

Not only does ebay keep shooting itself in the foot, but it keeps inventing new feet.

I was looking at a listing on ebay from MCM and they don't offer returns.

Seller does not offer returns. You are covered by the ebay Money Back Guarantee if you received an item that is not as described in the listing.

ebay has gone downhill for YEARS. Started with taking NO checks or Money-Orders(Buyer Protection..or...forced allocation into Paypal? Duh on that one)..Then, stopped having the BUYER buy Insurance. Selling a big ticket item, and, it burns up in a rear-ender....guess who's fault it is..The SELLER! Big Duh#2. Huge Duh #3..Sellers no longer allowed to leave negatives. It's a "Buy on Approval" now system...Period.(I just sold a 1913-S $5 Indian Head RAW(I had a BAD feeling about this)...2 days ago, a message "I've returned the coin..let me know when it arrives"...Guess it wouldn't grade the way HE wanted it(buyer="teletradecoins", with 100% positive feedback(of course!), and, 1856 of them!..
Let's see, what else...FEE's on shipping rates, always sweet to have more profits taken away, and, now, loss of top-rated seller status, cause many buyers had problems PAYING via Paypal, and, cancelled their orders in frustration.
So...tag me as when it's time to unload my investment coins I have had secure slabbed via PCGS, ebay won't get a dime.
3 years ago, selling a friends' sterling flatware, I was hit by a PRO..he said my order was 2 ounces underweight, and, wanted a partial refund. I stood my ground, did some research, and, discovered he had done the same thing to 7 other sellers, and, destroyed them all, including sending back some flatware BENT, in retribution. I left the word NEGATIVE in the feedback back, and, 1 day, awoke to a "account suspended" icon...after numerous calls to ebay, all to no avail, they banned me for LIFE....yep. True story. 9 years of good sales, 100% feedback rating, over 12,000 feedbacks(25,000 actual), less than 1/10th of 1% return rate, all gone in a micro-second. Buyers BEHAVED back then, otherwise, THEY would get a negative feedback, and, that kept them in line, for the most part.
The scammer got cash, free flatware, and is still active under a new name. I am MORE than open to hear of any sites that sell coins where the playing field is level, if anybody has any ideas, shoot them my way.
I decided last year to invest in slabbing ALL my raw gold, and, more expensive coins with PCGS Secure labels, so, when I go to sell, I won't be hit by people sending back fake coins, and, getting refunds. It's pretty hard to crack open a slab, and not make some kind of damage, so, I am hopeful this investment will be secure. Probably take everything to a coin show, once spot price gets where I would want it, but, that may be 3-5 years, depending on what happens on a lot of different platforms. Heck, it might be easier to just take to a local coin shop and dump...IF spot is so high(gold over 3k/Oz, Silver above 75/Oz--Hey..I can dream, can't I?)...the lower price I would get would be close to what I would get selling on ebay, after the 14% loss from them, and Paypal fees, and, NO returns or hassles....walk in--sell--go to dinner at fine steakhouse!
I AM curious if anybody has sold via Great Collections, and, how they felt about the entire transaction and final results..good--bad--nuetral?
Cheers
Calvin
