Hi,

I have a 1967 Kennedy half dollar sealed in hard plastic. Does anyone know why this would have been done? I tried to scan and take a photo but pic turned out lousy.

Thanks

Many of those type encasement were done for promotional items, paperweights, or to sell.

Thanks for the info. It is similar to the pic but not quite that large only about 1/2" wide at most and no logo or any writing.

Do these come out of plexiglas with no residue. Always wondered if you could safely jailbreak an Encased Coin...

these do not come out of these easily. taking a hammer to them works (with effort) but can damage the coin. acetone would work, but the amount of acetone to eat away all of that would be costly.

Sand or grind the bulk of it away. Let acetone finish the job. Of course, knowing how far down to take it might require some skill.

I mean, the coin won't have much value one way or another, so why not just smash it? Try a sledge or mason's hammer for quick results.

I tried the hammer method as a kid with a keychain not too much larger than the dime it held and the coin was ruined due to the acrylic being stuck to it. The acetone combo may work, but that's a lot of effort.

Here's a link to the kind of coin I tried

I like to think that I would have left that dime alone, but we were all young once.

I had a year set .. That was sealed like this.

Spent years trying to figure out a good way to get them out.

What ended up working was using my drill press to drill as
many holes I could ... Without hitting any coin.

Then I hit with the hammer.
