As I've posted before the Roosevelt dime is probably my favorite series to collect. I can pick up uncirculated rolls for a pretty low premium over spot. They were the first silver coins I started collecting because I could afford them in unc condition. My focus is on uncirculated pre 1955 rolls and the MOD dimes. The only circulated year I collect is the 49-s. I feel like the prices are very good on these given the mintage. With that said, the popularity has to pick up before they ever see much upside. I thought the release of the MOD set @ 75,000 mintage would spark interest in the series but prices don't really reflect that. Is a redesign the only way these will ever gain interest? Do you think these or undervalued right now or will they always be a dud because of being overshadowed by nicer looking coins like the Mercury dime? Edited by LibertyEagle20 06/24/2016 3:58 pm

I have a MOD set and I love it. I think roosies will always be overshadowed by mercs, and that's just the way it will be. I personally like roosies though.

Part of the reason Rosies may suffer in popularity is because the series really has no tough "keys". It's just too easy (and inexpensive) to put together a set in 65.

I recommend all kids and newer collectors do a Roosevelt and a Franklin set. Circulated, unc, or slabbed, it doesn't matter. Collect what you like and what you can afford. Do all three. Personally I'd stay away from the proof and clad versions until completing the silver business strike, but it is your set, do as you wish. These are great intro series with silver coins. No real pricey key dates. Perfect for getting started out. Rosies (and Franklins) will always be less popular than Mercury dimes (and Walker halves) as the design isn't as appealing and the coins aren't as old. That is my gut feeling anyway. I like data not gut feelings though. Looking at ebay, we have the following from their database (for educational purposes only too fyi). It has taken 6 days and 8.5 hours to sell 200 PCGS or NGC Mercury dimes on ebay. It is much quicker for Roosevelt dimes at 2 days 23.25 hours to sell the last 200 PCGS or NGC Roosevelt dimes. By the raw data Rosies are outselling Mercs by an over 2 to 1 margin. Now that is volume only and the Mercs are selling for a higher price point, but the volume is with Rosie from what it seems. In Rosie's defense, she is outselling Mercs even if you filter out the clad dimes from the data. 4 days and 20 hours to sell 200 slabbed silver Rosies.

Roosevelt dimes will not increase significantly increase in value until the design changes. IMO people will THEN wake up and realize there's a "hole" in their collection (and I'm only referring to the silver issues). I have three sets of silver Roosevelts: -- raw UNC -- PCGS/NGC MS-66 and PF-67 -- PCGS/NGC MS-66 FT But at 74 I may have passed on before I ever realize a perceived profit.

Not so interested in the other coins in the MOD set. I just want to get the dime. As for the rest, this series is kind of a toss up. There have not been any really uber low mintages of circulation coins. Nothing to make a real "key" coin or the like. I think a series benefits from having a key or three. While Mercs ARE indeed beautiful coins, the 16D and the 21 P&D increase the interest in the series. They are the draw. Like the 09S VDB. Or the Jefferson War Nickels and the 50D. Unfortunately, Roosevelt dimes are just simply dimes.

For a new collector that is interested in doing sets a Roosevelt dime collection could be a good choice. Many collectors are not willing to pay the thousands it would take to put together a uncirculated classic set. Doing circulated sets is good, but a UNC set really looks nice. For most of us that collect on a budget and want to do a uncirculated set, Roosevelt dimes are a good option. I have two UNC sets, Dansco with proof and another without proofs. I think there are a few Roosevelt's that add to the collection. Early 1950's proofs 1940's and early 1950's D and S mints in Choice BU or better 1996 W Dimes from the MOD set I also enjoy putting AU/BU Roosevelt's away by the roll for stacking silver.

I've never cared what the masses thought to be popular or a "coin to collect". (Though I should say I HAVE been dismayed at what doesn't explode with mass interest and new passion with some coins) I've never sold or bought a coin on ebay before... (still can't even figure out how to do "ended auctions" to price check coins...lol) I have the Roosevelt Dansco with Proofs album and it's beautiful and well deserved to have a place in my collection! It's a must have, imo. I collect EVERY modern coin series, and EVERY classic coin that I can afford. My Kennedy with Proofs Dansco is similar to the Roosevelt with Proofs Dansco in the reasoning/reasons "not" to collect it....but like I say, I'm a collector of US coins, and that's what these are and they're treasured and valued by "me".

Beautiful dimes, GR58! I don't think interest will advance beyond what it is now, till a design change.

All silver dimes or any silver coins are desirable. As far as Roosevelt's they are a set that one can still collect at a reasonable price and without too much trouble. They also honor an important figure in our history as well as that of the world. A stellar series and long lived for sure.
