I am looking for some opinions on this one.

I sent this coin in for grading.

Looks to me like it is the same coin but for some reason they took it on themselves to clean (errr - "conserve") it!

(((I hope you didn't check the box on the submission form giving them the "ok" to conserve your submission for a nominal fee!)))

It is the same coin. The rim dings match on both sets of photos. The coin has been dipped. I would contact ANACS.

I am leaning towards it being the same coin, by looking at some of the
hit's on the cheek. So ... I am thinking it .. For some reason got dipped.

I checked and did not check for it to be conserved.

I did track the progress through ANACS. For several days it was sent off
For consult. I called ANACS on this status. They did say it was sent
out to verify the VAM.

For me ... I liked the toning, and whis it was in the same condition that
it was when I sent it in.

At this point ... I am not sure what I should say to ANACS.
Rest in Peace

It's hard to know what to do.

I wonder what they would say about it and I wonder what they would say after you told them you took photos of it before you sent it in.

Maybe they felt they had to conserve it in order to see the die crack ....?

You need to start by reading the back of your signed contract. If you do not like the coin, I would ask them to pay the fair market value of the coin plus grading and shipping fees. If they needed to conserve the coin to confirm variety, they should have called you first.

I think I would email the before and after pics to ANACS and ask them WHY they "conserved" a coin that you were perfectly happy with BEFORE they took it on themselves to screw up!

I really liked the toning on it and if they did dip the coin without you asking for that service they need to own up to it and make it right for you. That truly makes me sad....

I would be furious!

Interested in knowing what if anything they will do about this.

I will not send a coin in for grading to a company that will dip coins at their own discretion. If I want the coin "restored" I will request it.

GR58,
You should call ANACS and discus this with them. They need to know what happened and we would like to know if this dipping thing is SOP. I would be unhappy if this happened to me.

Wow. Definitely same coin. Definatly dipped. I don't think it's trick photography. I would start with westernsky's advice. Email them both sets of pics, tell them you did not check the restore box and see what they say. Be nice but highly inquisitive and go from there.

Thank you all for your opinions.

I will try email first. I do want to take it to some local
dealers, to get their opinions.

I really have no idea what to expect .. not like they
can put the toning back on.

And yes .. it would be nice to know why someone would decide to do this to someone's coin.

I still think this warrants a phone call and not email.
