I purchased this coin years ago, in an ICG holder. I once tried to cross it to PCGS in the ICG slab but they would not cross it at the assigned grade. I recently decided to crack it out as submit to PGCS as a raw coin. How do you think this attempt turned out?

AU-58 or MS-63. I can't see the surfaces very well from the pictures.

Obverse is better than the reverse and I could see it making 63 on a good day. The gouge in the shield likely held it to 62 though. A very nice piece either way!

first, this is an great photograph of this coin. the problem is its so good you are seeing all of the tiny minute issues that I believe look worse than they are and thus the previous grades. I think this coin would grade at least MS64

I never took a photo of this coin in the ICG slab but I have the label: Interesting to consider that PCGS refused to cross this coin at MS-61 when it was in the ICG slab. This tends to support the theory that you get the best potential result by sending in raw coins. Of course, you then risk a downgrade or "details" grade.... Quote: I think this coin would grade at least MS64 Don't I wish! I'll have to be satisfied with the 1-point upgrade.

I would have said MS-63. MS-62 seems a little conservative, but the color in the photos seems to be more intense that how the coin probably looks in person. That might be coloring my view.

it would be nice to know exactly when it was graded.
I have a theory that low end "unc" coins will grade less conservatively at the end of the week vs grading at the beginning of the week. (Graders are in a bad mood on Monday but lighten up on Friday....especially late Friday afternoon!)
It's a stupid theory but nothing would surprise me.

The slab photo vs the original photos reveal a significant difference in color/luster and eye appeal. They show how much lighting and camera imaging can affect the appearance of a coin. The subdued color/luster of the slab photo are more inline with a 62 grade while the original photos make it look like an easy 63. The relatively large bump in value from 62 to 63 (~$3,000) sometimes play a role here as well.
