I too would have purchased it for that price. Even if fake, still interesting.

It's not an off-center, it's an uncentered broadstrike. It shouldn't have reeding.

The point abut the lack of a serif on the 1 is compelling because the only date it could be is 1940. But is the serif missing because it isn't there or due to poor photography? If it actually isn't there then it is a fake.

Coin is legit. Color is good. Coin shows evidence of metal flow, suggesting that this coin was struck, not cast. I also believe that the strange lettering & missing serif on the 1 is caused by this strong metal flow. Lastly, many Mercury dimes were struck with an inverted die set up, which this coin was also (seems like this would be a consideration that most counterfeiters would not think of).

Great coin for the price.

This one is tough. I would probably say that it is off center. Either way, I don't think the value would be impacted.

Hopefully I'll get it someday. He's told me he's shipped it twice now. We'll see . Not a real fan of mercari at all. If I can get the coin, I'll kiss that site goodbye. I don't know if it was a coincidence or not but my ebay was hacked immediately after I signed up. ebay was on top of it and shut em down pretty fast with no damage to me.

Probably 99.9% of the fakes coming out of China in modern times are die struck. And they did get into creating fake errors years ago.
