Need opinions please, I have never had a slabbed coin or even seen one - Hope these pictures are okay, if not let me know what you need. I really am the worst at pictures.

What does the S stand for in front of the $1?

PCGS - MS65

Thank you for your time.

This coin looks over graded. Note all the contact marks on the coin? I'd pass on this one.

NO way is that a MS65 coin, far too many contact marks especially on Liberty's Face.
Even at MS64 this would be overgraded.

So then MS63?

Paul thanks for telling me about the S (not all of the holders have the S on them - so I didn't know what it meant)

The coin/holder look fine. The grade appears generous but I see nothing to suggest any problem with the holder or coin.

A lot of them from that year seem to be similar to this one - maybe for that years strike quality it is correct? I have no idea about grading, just trying to learn.

thank you

What do you mean by "similar"? Your coin appears a bit beat up (numerous contact marks which hurts eye appeal) for a 65 so a 64 grade was likely more appropriate. That said the strike and luster on your coin do appear to be gem level.

By similar I meant a lot of contact marks on the face. Thanks for the extra info on strike and luster - like I said I want to learn about the grading and what to look for.

A little baggy for a 5. PCGS was, in my opinion, a bit looser in that era.

Okay so PCGS graded differently a few years back then - is that what you mean?

I agree it's over graded it's a 64 max. There are too many marks on the face, hits around 3 and 9 o'clock. Many of these are in mint state thanks to the GSA releases. Take your time and buy the coin and not the holder.

This one along with an 1880-CC (which I think is also a VAM3A- with the dash under the second 8 & Die break in G and on the left wreath) -I am just learning about the VAM's) belong to my sister-n-law and she has asked me to research and get opinions/information on them for her. I will be posting the 1880-CC later today.

I really appreciate all the information you have passed along to me in your replies.

Based on some of the opinions here, the coin was graded too high. Is that because PCGS took into account that the coin is from 1881? Are the standards lowered if the coin is not a modern day coin?

They are great coins and make sure you never crack them because at least the one you showed us is at least a point overgraded. Also I agree with what Sean sad, buy the perfect coin, not the perfect holder (except if it is a rare sample slab or a slab that was used for very little time) I got lucky. If anyone here knows sample slabs, you will like this story. So I went in to my LCS for my B-Day a while ago. I saw a sample slab and I liked it, they said Birthday Deal, 5 bucks for YOU. I said OK. That sample slab is an NGC 1.2, and one of the only ones accounted for without the Oak Tree Sticker.

Here is an article I read about over grading of coins and how that affects their value:
