Just recently I was going to post a question as to whether or not ASEs have specific varieties, errors or MS70 type grades that command higher premiums.

I still want to know about this and if a web site like NGC variety Plus exists that discusses valuations and features for non circulating coins.

But back to the reason that prompted me to remember this quesion I never got around to address.

Does this guy need a worm for his hook or does some justification exist for this class of asking price?

Also, if this claim does have some validity, what should we all be looking out for on Littleton ASEs or TPG-slabbed ASEs?

He's really trying hard to sell the coin at that price. I don't know how that coin can be worth that amount of money based on what he stated. Maybe his "friend" told him he had a coin and wanted him to see if he could get someone to pay a premium for it.

West Point didn't mint any bullion ASEs in 2001. I'm not sure what this seller is talking about.

I think maybe he's thinking about the "burnished" ASEs, which were minted at West Point starting in 2006. Those have a W mint mark on the reverse, which this ASE doesn't have.

Offer him 25 bucks and it will be overpaying for it. It is (as on the label) a routine 2001 bullion ASE.

I have a couple of rolls of them so I guess I'm REALLY rich.

A tad over 9 million minted

Edited to add: I think he meant $24.95

At least a few things are possible:

1. As Foxwoods Man noted, he could simply have misplaced a decimal point.

2. He visited CoinWeek.com's Silver Eagle Price Guide or the PCGS Price Guide and saw how they list the current market values for MS-70 versions of the coin as being $1,750 to $2,250. He might have figured his was "perfect" and thus worthy of the top price (+ his ebay fees).

3. He figured lots of words might allow him to "hook" an uneducated buyer. (I hope not!)

It will be interesting to follow this auction.

Note: I sent the Seller a message asking about the price - I'll report back if I hear anything.

Surely this must be a mistake. Did you contact the seller to confirm?

Hopefully it's a mistake. I doubt it, but that's just me.

The seller did respond to my inquiries about the ASE. The response indicated that he was just the middleman on the transaction and was just following the instructions of the friend for whom he is listing coins.

The fact that I mentioned there were inaccuracies in the coin's listing (e.g., unavailability of mintage figures for the coin) and that it is basically worth $25 did not have much of an impact -- other than to get the listing price lowered by $200.

It would appear the seller and his friend are going to fish a bit longer with this particular coin.

Very sad ..

I see people that really think they have something of value.

Sometimes it is hard to convince them they do not.

Even if the seller says he is a middle man .. it is his reputation.

Or .. as being said..someone is just looking for a sucker ..
I have heard there is one born every minute ..

Actually, there is an error, but it is on the label not the coin. The $2295 coin has a label that claims the coins were struck at the Philadelphia mint and the $25 coin does not specify a location.
