What is the strange toning on the penny?

The front is a shinny, but the back is more dull. What would cause this?

Just a guess ... it might have spent some time in a folder.

I have seen coins taken out of folder that were dull like that,
on the under side.

What do you think caused the black mark on the obverse?

Looks like it has been cleaned but maybe it's just bad storage.
The black mark is just a carbon spot I think - just some impurity in the planchet I assume.

The toning is different one side from the other, because it has been lying undisturbed for many years.
One side exposed to the air, the other relatively excluded from the air.
