Uncirculated coins sets are pretty much the holy grail of coin collecting. But there is something to be said about circulated coins. There is a sense of satisfaction of building sets and filling holes from your pocket change or roll hunting. Plus I think circulation coins tell a story. You can think about who, when, where, how they were used. Back in the day, small change had significant buying power as compared to today. Looking at the wear of the coin demonstrates how widely used change was used, hence older coins have more wear than newer coins.
Rest in Peace

The first coins I ever collected were old coins pulled from circulation and I'm still delighted when I find an old coin in my change even though it's worn.

I'm trying to assemble a set of Cities of Military Glory 10 rubles from circulation (though in this case I claim that coins received from helpful cashiers count, because otherwise it's too hard).
I'm not very sure what happened with the coins I put away in the first few years, so the current set consists of coins I found in the last 2 years or so... and it's about 60% done anyway.
I've only ever seen one of those with actual visible wear, however.

As buddy said it is always a delight to find an old coin in circulation. I have a couple of circulation sets going that I am working on from pocket change to roll hunting. As you mentioned, the imagination is stimulated when you find an old coin.

I always pictured Morgan dollars being used in a saloon in a western setting. Or perhaps a there was a train or bank heist. Pretty cool to think about! If money could talk...

I think there is a thread or two where some of our more creative members have 'made money talk'.

I do prefer the history that goes with a circulation piece. I try to collect my modern business strikes for circulation first. However, I have given up a few times and bought from coin shows just to fill the hole.

I can still remember finding that first old coin in change. Brought me back to the hobby 40 years later.

BTW - still have that first find.

Considering that my current area of interest is the early medieval period, I'm only collecting circulated coins.

I'll let you know the next time I get one from Walgreens. Any particular denomination, Spence?

I am a fan of the circulated sets and agree with what others have already said. I have no problem at all with a circulated set of Mercury dimes, Franklin halves, Morgans, etc. that show how hard they worked during their time of circulation.

@biedercoins, I am agnostic when it comes to denomination (although for practical reasons, I tend to purchase small silver coins rather than gold). Rather, I am focused on regions and especially on the date. You may find this thread interesting:
