I know this is a US coin but the SS Gypsum Empress sailed between Nova Scotia and the US until the early 80's. Just wondering if anyone would know if there would be a reason these would be put together or maybe just a souvenir for someone? Thanks! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

It looks home-made. I can't imagine a commercial product looking that crude.

It could be commercial, it just looks a little beat up. It could have been a pocket piece or maybe it got lost in a junk drawer.

Possibly a casino chip? That would help explain it's beat condition.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe they gambled with them on the ship. It would be interesting to know the story behind it.

I like these different ideas. Part of the fun is speculating, but hopefully someone will eventually come along with the answer.

Good mystery. I'm guessing a souvenir - spending money to encase half dollars as gaming chips seems illogical.

Here's my guess:
Someone who worked on the ship found a nice brass ring that fell off a rail or something and it just fit nicely around the coin. So there it is -- all that was needed after that was a stamping kit.

Sorry about the pictures, I just noticed they were rotated. I wanted to mention as well that the coin is stuck in good and won't pop out but it does turn or spin around inside the ring.

We own a thrift store in Nova Scotia. We buy a lot of estates and once in awhile we get coin collections and oddball coins like this one. I have no info on this coin and was hoping someone on here might have seen something like it to find out a bit more about it.
