Still going through pennies (quit for awhile to let my eyes recover). I came across this 1987D Lincoln, and the D is slanted a bit to the right. I compared it to some other 1987D's in the stack, and it seems like there are some straight, some with a slight tilt. This was just enough more to have caught my eye. Is it normal?

I've posted the slanty one first and a straight one for comparison. The apparent doubling on the date on the first appears to be a trick of the light using that scope. It's not there when viewed with a loupe.

I don't think so. It shows up when I use that scope, but I don't see it when I use a loupe. Probably a trick of the light.

Thanks for posting Eagle Eye Lisa!

I defer to the experts for a definitive answer. That said, your coins looks at least similar to 1987-D RPM-012, D/D Rotated CW.

Also see:

1987-D RPMs from the tremendous VarietyVista.com, "home of the CONECA Master Listing of Die Varieties" developed and continuously updated by James Wiles (who strikes me as being exceptionally generous).

Commonly Used Abbreviations from the CONECA website.

Great questions like yours spark interest, curiosity, and learning.

All the best,

Mark

Looks like Die Deterioration on the '7'.

The mint marks were added by hand until 1989. In 1990 the design contains the mint mark. No longer punched. All will be in the same place. But the pre 1990 coins were hand punch. It is unusual to find a rotated mint mark, but it happens. Some will also be placed high or low. but that is just normal. As long as it is below the date, east of the lower bust and west of the edge of the die, they are in the target area. So you can find a few of these searching.

But as far a I know there isn't a premium for these. Probably a million coins of them for each die that has this angled punching.
