Hey all, found this 1906 V nickel, I'm just confused since it seems gold'ish and the details on liberty are not really there. The coin weighs 5 grams. Not sure if its just a fake. Any details or insight would be appreciated, thanks! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Its probably just been gold plated. Its usually the 1883 "No Cents" Nickel you see gold plated.

First, welcome to CCF. Second, you didn't ask, but you may be wondering why an old nickel like this might be gold plated. See the link below for one potential reason. I'm not saying that you have an actual racketeer nickel as yours seems to have seen years of wear before being plated, but you might find this interesting nonetheless. http://www.coin-rare.com/1883-racke...nickels.aspx

It's a interesting story, but that is all it is, a story. Completely fictitious.

Conder - Fictitious? Really? Isn't that where the expression "not worth a gold-plated nickel" came from?

Never heard that expression (sure you aren't confusing it with "not worth a plug(ged) nickel", and there WERE gold plated nickels being passed as half eagles back then, but the Josh Tatum story and that of any court case is completely made up. No contemporary records of an such case has ever been found. From what I understand the story itself doesn't predate the 1950's

Conder - Apparently I misunderstood your reference, got it now. And yes (I am no doubt much older than you), I well recall both the "plugged nickel" and "gold-plated nickel" adages from my youth.
