Hey guys I'm fairly new to coins, family hobby and as a paperboy ended up with some interesting pieces. I'd like to know what is the best way to have a an 1893s Morgan graded and what it typically cost. I am not a member of any coin related group yet. Thanks in advance.

Quite a coin! Your best bet would be to show the coin to some reputable local coin dealers (check the ANA, PNG, or google to find some near you) and if they all agree that it's the real deal -- there are a LOT of fake 1893-S Morgans around -- then one of them would probably be willing to submit the coin to NGC or PCGS on your behalf if you pay the grading fee. If possible, post some pictures here for us (obverse & reverse) so that we can get a look at it.

For a 1893 S Morgan you do want to have some experts look at it,
before sending it off for grading.

There are some known die markers tha .. can help with authentication.

Once you have a good idea it is authentic, NGC or PCGS would be
the best choice.

As for how .. check out their website's for how to submit coins.

Or as posted above check your local coin shops or larger coin shows.
Sometimes you can submit through them.

Here is a link to a CCF thread showing how to send into
ANACS.

http://goccf.com/t/272342

For a 1893 S my first choice would be NGC.

ANACS specials are for coins under $500. But of course they
will grade over $500 coins under their regular pricing.

If I just wanted it authenticated I might send it into ANACS.
If I was doing it for selling, then I would go with NGC.
It is a little harder to send into NGC and cost more.
But on better coins ...higher priced coins NGC might sell
for more.

Agree with GR58. Please post pics on here if possible and zoom in on areas such as LIBERTY on the obverse to look for the bunny ears diagnostic.

Hey folks, Here are picts I posted on the grading page sometime ago that I had forgotten about. I can remove the coin and take additional picts. Mainly I would like to know if this is worth sending in for grading just to have it done. Thanks in advance.

Yes, needs to be graded due to its rarity. Probably at least a $2000 coin on ebay. Plus due to ebay rules, if you sell, you technically need to have it graded.

Also, please go to a local coin shop and buy a holder with the foam ring, please get it out of that cardboard flap. Handle this thing as if its a baby.

I would send it in for grading.

If you have access to a good coin shop, I would see if
they could submit it to NGC.

If not, the easiest is sending it to ANACS.

Also, if I had this coin in hand I would go to VAM World online
and see if I could verify some die markers.

Thanks for the replies. GR58, do the picts indicate any potential die markers? Thanks in advance.

I am not that good at VAMing ...
You might do better posting pictures in the VAM section here
on CCF. They might want better pictures .. out of the holder.

Date position looks good and mm looks like VAM 1 position. We need a super closeup pic of the R & T in liberty to confirm but I'm afraid dirt in the letters might be hiding the markers

I see a nice G-VG details piece here, once cleaned. Is it worth slabbing? Definitely.
