Anyone own one of these overstrikes? There was also a 1975 version. I just recently became aware of these on a dirtfishing forum.

No worries
I would imagine that a metal detectorist site would talk about coins a fair bit as there have been some fantastic finds over the years by metal detectors .

@Cascade and trout1105,

The coin in question was not dug, but someone on the site had posted that they had in possession a 1963 Kennedy half, accented hair variety. Turns out that it was actually a 1964 half, but the 1963 Carr halves were mentioned.

Ah ha. Hey, have you seen his 64d Morgan oversrike currently for sale? And The Proof Likes should be available by early next week. If you're a Morgan guy you won't have a chance to buy one at issue price again once they sell out

This is the thing that bugs be about the Carr coins. Yes, the original buyers know what they have, but when people get them second or third hand, they often think they have something rare and valuable. Worst, they may have paid good money thinking they were getting a deal.

Imagine twenty or thirty years from now the topics we will see from the new members.

I do not dislike Carr, I like his work. I just wish he could mark his coins in a creative way so that we can definitely answer those new users. "Yup, that is a Carr fantasy piece, we know it because his initials are hidden in the eagle's tail feathers..." <insert zoomed image>

But jbuck, his stuff already is worth good money and in 30yrs probably much more so. Anyone needs only Google the coin and date and his overstrikes will pop up.

But my point is they may think it is worth much, much more because they believe it was a genuine mint rarity, not a popular fantasy piece.

The only Kennedy half Daniel Carr overstruck that I do not have is the 1963-D. And I am in the middle of a trade for one of these. I have an extra 63 also as originally I bought two - one for both sets.

On the 63s, Daniel was having a bit of trouble and they were coming out just ever so slightly larger diameter. I asked him when I put mine into a 2X2 and it fit into the 2X2 with a bit more difficulty than normal.

I do see what you are saying jbuck, and having thought about this before, I have to wonder if the people surprised by these might not be of the same type that find a MD 1969-S penny and think they have the "big one."

As Cascade said, these show up now with google. And just like they now anyone who has a question concerning a find can end up here with us on CCF, its a win win!

I do see what you mean about the micro-DC. Something akin to the Omega gold pieces. Interesting concept.

I also have to wonder if someone finds one in the future if they won't be worth the "much, much more" you speak of anyway.These are made in such limited numbers there will likely never be enough to go around.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one jbuck. If someone is willing to lay down many thousands on a coin and does not do their due diligence with nothing more than a Google search I have no sympathy for them. And that situation happening is so remote it's almost a non-issue anyway. I can see someone paying a quick thousand or so thinking it could be a steal but again its only a Google search away. And now the new HPA ammendments that went into effect on 11/16/16 basically give genuine US coins overstruck with fantasy dates a pass so now it's settled that the US government has no qualms with them

I just cannot wrap my head over why anyone would pay anything significant for these overstrikes. I grant that they are excellently done.

@Oriole
For myself the clincher was that when a kid, and the 1975 coins were due out, for some reason I was disappointed that there was not a complete date run of quarters, halves, and dollars. I liked the Bicentennial designs, but just somehow (again - a kid) felt cheated. In fact I remember dreaming of finding these 1975 coins in circulation and was always sorry I woke up to find my new 1975 Ike (etc.) disappear into the world of reality. So when Daniel made the 75s, I got to the chance to actually hold the coins in hand that had vaporized in childhood. I think if these had not been over-strikes (hence actual coins), they would not have been as "fun" to me.

As for my liking his other overstrikes now, I see it akin to people picking favorite football/basketball/baseball/hockey teams. When the "facts" are in, everybody KNOWS that in "reality" their team is the best, their team WILL win this year (and if not, it was not their team's fault), and so now let's go out and paint our faces team colors, yell like maniacs, and have a great time!

Oh, my favorite "teams" are Remington, Winchester, and possibly Fenwick. Personally, I never understood people wanting to see a bunch of grown throwing around a piece of leather when the outdoors is so amazing. I also don't mind not understanding the mindset - it keeps those people out of the woods

They are happy... I am happy...hobby.
